The first generation Lancer Evolution series 1-CD9A & 2,3-CE9A is based on the 4th generation Lancer released in 1992-I, 1994-II,1995-III. The roots of this 4WD, 2.0 L in line 4 cylinder intercooler turbo engine with supercar beating performance is a ’family sedan’ with more aero parts than a Zero Fighter aircraft and more front bumper grille area than a yakiniku shop. But why was such a car even designed and made?
To conquer the WRC. In the 1980s to 1997 automobile manufacturers were required to produce a limited number of roadgoing examples of competition cars to be homologated for FIA sanctioned competition use in the ‘Group A’ category. This effectively meant that technology used in motorsports was directly transferred into customer based vehicle with high quality and high-technology parts, giving amateurs or performance car enthusiasts the chance to sample virtually identical DNA of these formidable rally machines. The 4G63 iron block engine produces 270PS and 31.5kgm weighing a light 1260kg. Mated to a Full Time All wheel drive with viscous centre and mechanical rear diff, it’s road holding grip and acceleration bested even the BNR32 GT-R in tests in its day.
This black example is the pride and joy of good friend @chipsontheloop_evo is a true driving enthusiast, he often takes to the Touge and C1 for adventures either with his partner or with us.
When I first saw his car and met him, I immediately thought how it resembled characters car from the popular manga /anime ‘Initial D’. Driven by Kyoichi Sudo of ‘Team Emperor’. Our teammate may not be Japanese or wear a white bandana or cut the stickers of teams they beat, but enjoys every moment behind the wheel of the Lancer Evolution III. It is now truly a Neo Classic that stands among the best of 90s JDM cars.
