During the Golden Age of Comics (1938-1956), the patriotic spirit was in full-blast with comic covers portraying All-American heroes, desperately wanting to fight in WW2, smashing evil Japs or foiling German plans. This was done in a very not-so-subtle way and the antagonists of these stories were bland and drawn like caricatures. A lack of the Comics Code made the comics quite violent as well. They’re a kind of guilty pleasure for me. Some are wonderfully drawn, but they can be quite racist at times. These covers should be recognized as products of their time while their artistic value shouldn’t be diminished because of their content. Source: ACTION! MYSTERY! THRILLS! Two Bishops Escape Death:
One of them, Msgr. Ugo Poletti, was admitted to the hospital for a broken nose; the other, Msgr. Edoardo Piana remained unharmed - The car of the two prelates had veered off the road in an attempt to dodge a cyclist. • Msgr. Ugo Poletti, who was at the wheel of his own car - a "1100" - was returning to Novara from Varallo together with Msgr. Edoardo Piana and two other priests. The accident occurred at 19:00 near Cestai, 6 km from our city. Monsignor Piana emerged nearly unharmed (he only complains of a ruptured blood vessel on his head). According to him, he saw the cyclist standing in the distance, on the roadside, talking to a woman. When the car was no more than 15-20 meters away, the cyclist began crossing the road. Monsignor Poletti braked sharply and swerved to avoid hitting him, however, the cyclist was hit and thrown to the ground. The car swerved off the road and ended up, after having hit a light-pole, in a ditch. The cyclist, later identified as 52-year-old Pietro Brignone, a resident farmer of Cesto, was later accompanied to the Ospedale Maggiore in Novara, where he was hospitalized for wounds and bruises on various parts of his body. Msgr. Poletti also had to be admitted to the same hospital, having reported a nasal fracture. Monsignors Poletti and Piana had been appointed auxiliary bishops of Novara just over a month ago when our bishop, Msgr. Gremigni, had been made Archbishop. In the evening, in addition to numerous prelates, Police Chief Pagani visited the bedside of Monsignor Poletti. ※ When the vehicle made contact with the lightpole, Poletti's head was thrown forward, making contact with the wheel. In addition to a broken nose, he sustained permanent damage to front teeth and face, resulting in a scar below the right eye. This accident could have damaged the frontal lobe, in addition to the potential development of lesions. ※

Late night spin with the legendary group The Platters.😍🙌 This is a compilation of some of their best songs that, as I understand it, came as a bonus album in one of those Reader’s Digest Boxes that you sometimes see in charity shops (or at least I do). Makes sense that it’s been kept in a box, it’s still in near mint condition even though it was released in 1976.👌 The Platters are one of those groups, whos songs you probably know of without necessarily knowing anything about the band.🤷♂️ Iconic songs like Smoke Gets In You’re Eyes, The Great Pretender or, perhaps most of all, the amazing Only You are timeless classics. The classic soul sound of the past is present, like it is with few other artists, in this bands sound.❤️🕺 The story of The Platters revolves around two people. The lead singer Tony Williams and other group member Herb Reed. The commercial success of the group, including the hits I mentioned, all came from the original line-up between 1953 and 1961. After that, Williams left the group to pursue a solo career. However, from there on and to his death in 2012, Herb Reed continued to perform under the name The Platters with various constallations of members through the years.🎼 Tonight however, is all about the songs of the classic line-up. I dare you to find a cozier way to end a friday night!😍🙌🕺👌❤️🎼 #vinylcommunity#igvinylcommunity#vinylcollector#vinylcollection#vinylcollectionpost#nowspinning#instavinyl#vinyligclub#vinyloftheday#recordoftheday#vinyllover#vinylporn#vinyladdict#vinyl#record#music#vinylgram#vinyljunkie#music#recordsreposted#iloveDiscogs#reverblp@instavinyl@thevinylrecordclub#theplatters#soul#blues#funk#50s#60s
#reflections While it may be 11 weeks till the end of the year, I realized today it’s only 11 days until my next birthday so I’m reflecting on the year that has been. I’d say the word “change” is probably the most accurate one to describe it. Everything has changed. Everything. It’s been very overwhelming at times, but we’ve made it thus far.
Each and every day I grow a little...I learn something more about myself, others, and human frailty...sometimes it’s profoundly painful...sometimes it’s beautiful, and ALL of it is who I’m called to be on MY life journey.
And, as I take another step further into my #50s (in 11 days) I am choosing to further open my heart and mind to more magic, joy, abundance, and deeper love and connection...so that I can keep growing and evolving into the highest version of this spiritual human I’m designed to be 🙏🏽 #exhale#birthdayreflections#wisdom#rise#invictus#loveis
16 year old Elizabeth Taylor in her iconic Philippe Halsman portraits taken in 1948.
In October 1948, she arrived at Halsman’s New York City portrait studio, which still exists today and is now home to the Halsman Archive. “In my studio Elizabeth was quiet and shy. She struck me as an average teenager, except that she was incredibly beautiful,” Halsman reflected in his book Halsman: Sight and Insight.
“On a purely technical level, he pointed out that two sides of my face photographed differently," Taylor would later recall. "One side looked younger; the other more mature. In posing for Halsman, I became instantly aware of my body.” She also recalled him shouting one particularly memorable instruction for her: “You have bosoms, so stick them out!”
Taylor had worn her own earrings to the shoot, but she didn’t wear a necklace. During the sitting, Halsman borrowed his wife Yvonnes blue triangle pendant necklace and placed it around Elizabeth’s neck. This subtle decision added a new level of impact to the portrait. The necklace was later passed down to Halsman’s daughter Irene, who still cherishes the keepsake today.
“[Halsman] was the first person to make me look at myself as a woman... After my session with Halsman, I was much more determined to control my screen image. I wanted to look older so I insisted on cutting my hair. In 1949 I went from portraying Amy in Little Women, another child-woman to playing a full-fledged romantic lead in The Conspirator. At barely seventeen, I grew up for all America to see.”
Halsman ran into Taylor a few weeks later in Hollywood and when approached by him, she couldn't remember where they had met. “She could have not hurt me more," he would later reflect. "Her words showed again how important a photograph can be and how unimportant the photographer who made it.”
