When my friend told me about Crystal Springs, I didn't really know what to expect other than that there would probably be flowers. I was happy to discover that it boasts walking trails that meander along a lake and several ponds.
That means there were tons of birds all around, enjoy the shallow water, the grasses, and of course people feeding them birdseed.
Brilliantly colored male ducks of multiple types, their more muted mates, Canadian geese, and even a bonus animal of the non-avian variety were all around.
I've never considered myself a birdwatcher, but I enjoyed watching them all interact. Until I was almost turned deaf by the geese, anyway.
This is my backyard.....you're unwelcome in these parts

There's this one Thoreau quote that hangs in countless classrooms, is scribbled on post-its in cubicles everywhere, and that gets pinned on Pinterest over and over. You can probably guess the one.
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."
It's a misquote (or a paraphrasing, if you're feeling kind) from Walden, but I still love it. I love the general concept, but I particularly love the focus on simplicity in the larger text. I love the idea of paring down our lives, of re-examining and reflecting.
I also really love the end of that section: "If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."
For whatever reason, this print calls on all of this for me. It's not available yet, but I wanted to share my progress with you. And apparently my Monday thoughts, too. I hope you have a great start to your week!

Some seasons are simply slower than others, and that’s okay.

What a busy, busy week - for all of us! I know many of you are preparing to travel or are planning to host your family and friends, and maybe some of you will be like me and watch a precious recital of little ones singing about turkeys tomorrow. (Gobble!)
There are endless sales and deals every which way we turn this season, and I almost hesitate to add to the “noise” right now. (Isn’t it all just a bit stressful?) But I also want to hug each one of you and take you to coffee, and a little discount might be the easiest way to do something close to that.
I’m still getting everything in order and finalizing some new reproductions, but I’m hoping to share the details tomorrow. I want to give everyone a chance to see it and not take away from visiting or eating pie, so I’ll make sure it runs a solid week.
This beauty, a hand-embellished reproduction on gorgeous cotton mould-made paper, will be one of the new pieces to join the lineup!

Full disclosure, this square is not this moment. The reality is I carved some progress last night, planning to take a photo this morning while my boys had snack. That was a couple hours ago, but Sam spontaneously transformed into a two-year-old Godzilla child, so here I am posting while the water boils for lunch and Sam throws things at me now and then. #letsbehonest

My name is Aftyn, after the poem written about the river Afton. I write science fiction. My favorite food is cheese enchiladas, followed closely by my dad’s lasagna. I’m a premature hugger and get genuinely and enthusiastically excited about my people, kind of like a puppy. But I’m also shy and reserved other times, depending on my energy.
I’m a mother and a wife and a daughter. I’m someone who never expected to be an artist, and I’m still determining what that means to me. What I want it to mean. But regardless I know I thoroughly enjoy the creative process and the community of people I’ve met through it.
Lastly, I apparently prefer to work on the floor for larger pieces.
There’s an impromptu re-introduction for you. Now, tell me something about YOU. Can be as simple as where you’re from or a favorite thing, but I’d also love to hear any hidden hobbies or loves you don’t often share. 💙

I love this mix of paint and ink together, with printed geese flying against painted skies. I have a handful of these available on my website. Which color sky do you like best? 💙
“There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot. For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable as free speech.” Aldo Leopold

Would you believe me if I told you I generally tend toward minimalism in real life? Or at least utilitarianism. Pragmatism. Something like that. Contrary to my flatlays and my art, I like simple and useful. Comfortable. Straight forward.
But I also like to share my inspiration alongside my work. I once had a gentleman, a fellow artist, tell me that real talent doesn’t need all the showmanship of staging and so forth. Whether or not he’s right (🙄), I don’t particularly care, because the creativity that goes into “setting the scene” is a lot of fun.
Also, I typically work on either my studio floor or my living room floor, and those don’t photograph as well. 😉
What do you think? If you are a creative, do you enjoy showcasing your work? If you are someone who follows creatives, does it bother you one way or the other? Just curious.
