A new year, new diet and weight loss news.⠀
A study that was recently published in NEJM found that the obesity rate is predicted to rise above 50% in 29 states, with no state having a prevalence below 35% while a separate review, published in Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology , suggests that the obesity epidemic and the rise of related chronic conditions correspond with the increased intake of ultra-processed food. ⠀
In regard to healthy eating strategies, the Mediterranean diet was again named the best overall in the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings.⠀
In other news, research published in the AJCN found that the odds of being overweight were substantially lower in children who drank whole milk compared with those who drank reduced-fat milk. However, critics suggest that confounding factors were not properly considered and that reverse causality is just as plausible as an explanation for the findings.⠀
In more encouraging news, a new study in the JNCI found that women in their 50s who experience sustained weight loss over 10 years are at reduced risk for breast cancer compared with women whose weight remains stable. ⠀
Finally, the FDA has issued a safety alert regarding the weight-management drug lorcaserin. ⠀

Earlier today before leading a group of Lewis and Clark students in a volunteer session for Portland Books to Prisoners I toured what was originally built as Wapato jail, and will now be Bybee Lakes Hope Center. The owner of the building has been paying $50,000 a month keeping it up as a vacant structure in the hopes that an entity would come along to save it and turn it into something positive. When a nonprofit from the coast decided they could take it on and turn it into a homeless shelter and center for services Jordan Schnitzer, the owner, paid $110,000 to extend the demolition permit he had pulled to give time for @helpinghandsreentry to create the vision and raise the initial funds.
This organization has met their one year fundraising goal in just one month, and are now working towards their two-year fundraising goal! It was so good to see the space in person and find out their vision for it.
This is happening and i am so happy about it, especially considering the fate that was expected when our city and county couldn’t get their shit together to save it. At least $58 million in tax payer money would’ve been wasted when the building was demolished had it not been for a patient property owner and a nonprofit from the Oregon coast. Stay tuned for the new use of this property. It is really exciting!

You are not alone. I was in your shoes, battling this incredibly difficult decision you’re about to make. The thing is- you already know EXACTLY what to do. My struggle came from seeking out everyone’s approval and opinion to make the decision for me, when really, I knew it all along. Before making any huge, life changing decisions, do some serious thinking, planning, evaluating, and organizing making sure you look at your life as a WHOLE. That was the game changer for me. In the past, I was either hyper focused on my career OR motherhood OR school. There was absolutely no balance, which is why it took a lot of trial and error (and learning the hard way) to finally come to the realization that I was paving a path of destruction. If you’re wanting to change careers, look objectively ay your job dissatisfaction. What the root cause for wanting change? As much as I encourage mentorship, and reaching out to others for advice and feedback, the loudest voice you listen to when making these changes should be your own. Only YOU know what’s best for you. Another thing I want you to consider is being REALISTIC while still allowing yourself to dream and take chances. Emotions (on their own) can lead you to making irrational, bad decisions. Use your logic. Use your heart. Let them work TOGETHER.
Taking the leap of faith and trusting my intuition to change course was the best decision I’ve ever made. I feel FREE. I’m finally happy and content and fulfilled in ALL areas of my life. It’s absolutely liberating and I want the same for YOU. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to LIVE and gain some life experiences to truly figure out your calling and your purpose. Give yourself grace and patience. Keep an open mind and embrace everything life has to offer you. Trust yourself, and make the decision for you, NOBODY ELSE.

If you can’t go in your neighborhood and buy a vegetable and you have to take two hours worth of buses to buy a carrot then that’s a problem.
And if we don’t address the environment we live in, we’re not going to be able to get people to make healthy choices.
I remember reading a study where they looked at people who were overweight and diabetic, who lived in very low socioeconomic neighborhoods. They moved them to a slightly better neighborhood and their blood sugar went down and their weight went down without any other intervention — just giving them a better zip code.
So, our zip code is a better determinant of your health than our genetic code and we don’t seem to be acknowledging that in our policies.

2020 is a year of change.
It’s the year I take control of my mind.
In 2021, anxiety and depression will be a thing of the past.
Here’s a few things I’ve been working on:
1. Creating more art. (@designsbyale.x shows how many pieces I’ve created just this year).
2. Getting back into the gym. In 2018, I quit going consistently and in 2019 I quit going all together. I let depression weigh me down, but that’s not happening from here on out.
3. Working on my relationship with the Lord. My spiritual well being is being mended.
4. Making more friends. This has already been a huge accomplishment. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met this year that I will love and cherish forever.
5. Being more mindful about what I eat. This is the most recent change. I’m going to start meal prepping this weekend!
6. Seed cycling. A natural way to help regulate hormones. (I am not qualified to talk about the health benefits of this).
I’m sure there will be more changes I decide to make as we move forward in 2020, but this is what I know I can handle right now.
I plan on 2020 being my happiest and healthiest year yet. I’m speaking it.

A long day at school ended with a beautiful sunset!
Today, we were presented with a case on multiple myeloma. A super helpful mnemonic for the clinical manifestations of this disease is Bones “BREAK”.
We practice our clinical reasoning skills each week as part of our practice of medicine course. It’s nice to apply my medical knowledge and reason through the history, PE, DDx, and workup for each patient case with my classmates.
“Be still.” A reminder to myself that I’m not in control. That no matter what storm I’m experiencing, Jesus will calm it. A reminder that the Lord is so powerful, and all I need to do is be still. Here’s a few verses that are close to my heart:
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Mark 4:39.
He says, "Be still, and know that I am God... Psalm 46:10.
The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14.
