The word #kin means #family , which apart from a #spouse and #children goes on to include the extended family. In its broadest sense it indicates the person who should be notified in case of any eventualities of #life such as an #accident , #emergency , or #death . It also has implications as to who would be #legally entitled to a decedents #property where there is no will.
If there is no will or credible #document in place, this is likely to be the order: If you are #married , it would be your spouse. If you are a single parent or #widowed , it will be your children. If you are #unmarried and without children, your parents will be legal #heirs to your #estate ; if your parents are deceased your property will be distributed to #siblings and close #blood relatives.
Bear in mind that the status of next of kin does not in any way imply that those designated stand to #inherit any of the individual’s estate in the event of their #death . It is only by having a valid #will in place that you can protect your immediate family and ensure that your #investments and property do not go into the wrong hands.
A little over a year ago, I quit my full-time litigation job at a small firm in downtown Manhattan to focus on building my career as an innovator and entrepreneur. It was a scary decision but I had a clear focus: Esq.Me, a legal technology company that exclusively provides lawyers with a free marketplace where they can buy and sell their legal documents with one another, and get access to cost-effective legal services like document drafting and legal research. The goal of Esq.Me is to make practicing law for solos and small firms cost-effective, time efficient and profitable. (www.esqme.com) While in law school I worked in small law firms and with solos, and I realized we were wasting time and money in reinventing the wheel in document creation and research. So, when Igraduated from New York Law School (NYLS) I started Esq.Me, but just for New York lawyers. However, in 2013, lawyers, the legal market and I was not ready for what Esq.Me was trying to do. So, I went into litigation full-time and practiced in multiple areas of law ranging from federal criminal defense to medical malpractice litigation. And in 2016, I got lawyers from around the country who wanted to join Esq.Me but it wasn’t open to non-New York lawyers at that time. I felt that the timing was right and that both the market and I were finally ready. So, I quit my job to pick up Esq.Me again, and now, I’m a CEO/Founder of a legal tech company, have an excellent team, board of advisors and mentors around me, and get to innovate, inspire and create on a daily basis. Most importantly, my passion to inspire others in the entrepreneurial space has given me the fortunate opportunity to travel across the globe to speak on legal technology, entrepreneurship, leadership and the gender bias that persists in legal tech. My most recent guest speaking event was at The George Washington University’s MBA roundtable event and the Legal Geek Conference in London. And I will be speaking at MIT’s executive MBA program in December 2017. My advice to other lawyers who want to do something different is to make your passion into a mission to help others!

Yesterday, August 3, 2017, I treated myself to Dunkin Donuts as a reward after I finished drafting a 28-page legal and business analysis for a land deal my business partners and I are trying to execute for a start-up company we are building. I worked 3 days in a row at Starbucks in Waipio typing this document for 7 to 8 hours straight a day. Dunkin Donuts recently opened a store near Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii, making its return back to the State of Hawaii. I gave my mom 2.5 donuts today when she came by to drop off food she made.
