I always like to teach my clients to control each rep. I always see people lifting and lowering the weight carelessly.
There is SO much more to a rep than lifting and lowering the weight.
Within each rep consists of 3 muscle actions:
Eccentric: where the muscle lengthens (example shown above) or example would be the biceps during the downward phase of a curl. Enhanced eccentric training is a great way to build strength and this phase shouldn’t be neglected.
Concentric: where the muscle shortens (i.e the quadriceps during the upward phase of a leg extension exercise.
Isometric: where the muscle length does not change.
All reps are not created equal. 15 uncontrolled reps will feel a hell of a lot different than 15 controlled reps.
For example, if I did 15 reps of a goblet squat that is pretty simple.
But if I did 15 reps with a 3 Second Pause at the bottom (isometric muscle action), now this squat just became so much more difficult!
If your goal is to lift a weight up and down for as many reps as you can, then have at it.
But these characteristics of each repetition start to become more important when you have specific training goals!
