‘Fox On The Ridge’ from my little book of paintings. I always walk this way in the Nature Reserve to visit a fringe of flowers in the summer months. I’m also a fox magnet, seeing one most days, usually strutting past my Studio window.

I’ve been meaning to hike the Ridge ever since I moved back to Bozeman in June of this year. A few weeks ago, I finally made it happen. Unlike most hikes, this is a one way through hike that is generally accomplished by parking a car at the M and a car at Fairy lake which implies that at least one more person should be present to complete it. After letting summer slip by without accomplishing it, I didn’t think I would get another chance. However, I would look up at the ridge everyday, trying to determine if the conditions would allow me to go for it. On one of my off days earlier this month, I just decided to send it, thinking there wasn’t too much snow up there. Running on three hours of sleep, I drove up to Fairy Lake during the night and began hiking at 5am. To my dismay, from the beginning, the whole trail was covered in snow. Trekking through the dark alone in the wilderness was quite terrifying but also humbling. I made it up to Sacagawea and kept hiking. I stopped at Naya Nuki, the next peak over, as sunrise was happening. I was blown away as both the sky and landscape exploded with color. By far, the highlight of the whole hike. After it was over, I proceeded on the ridge, battling thick snow and relentless winds for most of the time. Thankfully, I brought my ice axe which was a life saver while I worked my way over the steeper sections. I got lost several times due to the lack of trail but always found my way back. Traversing up and down peaks seemingly without end really wore me down. Finally, around sunset time, I was approaching the M. The end was in sight. The sun went down and darkness slowly covered the landscape as I was hurrying to finish as fast as I could. Just before it got too dark to see, I arrived at the trailhead at 8pm, a solid 15 hours after I started the hike. You have no idea how ecstatic I was to have accomplished it, especially given the conditions. Definitely worth it, but I’m never doing the ridge again.

This Veterans Day we’re shining the spotlight on frmr Army SF Medic (18D) turned LPN @bfdhs13 🇺🇸Although we didnt serve together at the same time, we served together on the civilian side working the trauma rooms at Northridge hospital operating with a fun competitive chip on our shoulders deescalating 5150’s and dropping lines - because thats what military training does💉💪 So many healthcare workers today got their medical foundation from the military and lateraled those skills to the civilian side continuing to save lives, help people and be bada** team mates🇺🇸🤘🏽🏥 Thank you to all those who served and much love to those currently serving and bless those deployed fighting the fight🇺🇸 #cheers#happyveteransday#fitscrubs#veteranowned
