Finally... I can't adequately explain how happy I was to take Linnaeus out again, but I cried tears of joy upon seeing him fly and did more of the same on the drive home. As many of you know, the losses of Trevize and Pel hit me hard. I was really hoping I could get the telemetry to work so I would have a failsafe. I mounted the Merlin Nano to Linnaeus' tail and tested it indoors. Things were looking up, but while testing it, Linnaeus lost the feather to which the transmitter had been attached. He's not moulting, so I know it was just too heavy for a single cockatiel tail feather. Necklace mount was a definite no from Linnaeus, so if I wanted to use it, I would need to harness-train or fit them for falconry backpacks. This realisation was a terrible low point for me. I was already struggling with the stress of my job and have been depressed most days lately. I was so looking forward to taking the cockatiels back out and with an extra precaution on board. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. After much deliberation, I decided that I had allowed myself to become paralysed by fear. I was letting my failure with Pel and my hope for a telemetry cushion strangle me even though Linnaeus and Ki-ok were not Pel. Saturday morning, I took them to the park Linnaeus had been to once before, which is surrounded by trees on all sides. As soon as I let him out of the carrier, two things were immediately obvious: he could handle this, and he was happy to be out again. He flew over and over. This was a new place for Ki-ok, so I didn't let her out, but I did walk her around in the cage. Linnaeus was a champ, as usual. Seeing him shine white in the sun and turn black against the blue sky again was a complete infusion of happiness.

Nadya has been with us at @starlightoutreachandrescue for almost 8 weeks while she nursed her EIGHT kittens. Her kittens will be available for adoption in another week or so, and she will be going back to Friendswood Animal Control tomorrow. She's a sweet, cuddly girl who is great with dogs and cats and would make an excellent addition to a home with kids.
