⛪ Magical Santiago.
Santiago is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression. *
If you’ve been then you know what I’m talking about.
A magical oasis nestled in the mountains east of San Jose Del Cabo. This lush Pueblo is full of history & sits as a portal to the Sierra de La Laguna.
Sierra de La Laguna is not what you expect when you imagine the Los Cabos area.
At 6,857 feet in elevation, the "Sierra de la Laguna High Point", is the highest point in Baja California Sur state. *
Pine trees and mangos. There are all kinds of cool Eco-lodges and ranches in this area that offer everything from hiking, zip-lining, horseback riding hot springs & waterfalls.
The lush palm oasis of Santiago itself is absolutely lovely. Nestled amongst mango and orange orchards, Misión Santiago de Los Coras dates back to 1724 & has a bit of a tragic bloody history. *
Jesuit missionary Ignacio Maria Napoli first visited the area in 1721 & baptized a few Indians. Returning in 1724 he founded Misión Santiago de los Coras (later called Santiago el Apóstal).
Indians north of Loreto were more passive & yielded to the ways of the padres, but many to the south did not. Especially resentful were the Pericú witch doctors who had lost their stature & continued to resist.
A decade after the mission was founded, a rebellion broke out over the entire south cape region, the padres at San Josẻ del Cabo & Santiago were killed.
The heart of the 1734 rebellion was at Santiago, where a group of Pericues first killed two unarmed Spanish soldiers, then Padre Lorenzo Carranco. They dragged the padre outside his home where they ended his life with arrows, sticks, & stones. They also killed a mission Indian who tried to help Carranco. After throwing the bodies into a bonfire, they ransacked the homes & church & set fire to both.
They went on to San Jose del Cabo where they Padre Nicolas Tamaral was killed in the same brutal manner. The uprising ended some two years later when the groups of dissident Indians were confronted by soldiers & passive mission Indians.
Today’s Santiago offers a much more peaceful & adventurous experience that I highly recommend!
