This is one of the types of birds that got me into birding. I’m completely smitten with their color, personality, faces, wings, behavior... everything. For me, needing to know more about this adorable blue bird was a gateway birding experience. I can’t wait for them to be swarming all over the local park again!
How to be a Brant (from left to right)
1. Dive for food, making sure to stick your bum nice and high in the air while doing so
2. Wildly fling seaweed in an attempt to get it in your mouth
3. Eat seaweed (finally!) phew!
Leaf Me Alone
What do I do with a fish? Oh right, I’m supposed to whack it then swallow it.
Wait a minute, something’s not right . . . this isn’t a fish it’s a LEAF! Yuck, ptooey, I’m spitting it out.
King sized disappointment by a Kingfisher.

☑️ 186. Wow, just wow! This photo is of just the seventh pallid cuckoo (Cuculus pallidus) to ever be recorded in New Zealand!
Normally found in Australia, this juvenile has been happily hanging out in a rural garden near Collingwood since it was first located by local Loran Swafford on 5 December. Unlike most rare birds, this one was easy to find and very confiding and chatty, calling regularly and allowing me close looks as it flew from perch to perch hunting worms from the grass. Amazingly, Loran also located and photographed a closely-related oriental cuckoo (Cuculus optatus) from her house just a couple of km away, but unfortunately it flew into a window the night before I arrived and hasn't been seen since. Regardless of the story that could've been, I'm so happy to see my first ever pallid cuckoo (and with such amazing views) and to add it to my big year list!

Juvenile barn swallow facts:
Scientific name: Hirundo rustica
My facts are from studying out in the field and researching through the years.
They are brilliant nest builders! They will fly around in great distance observing closely until finding the perfect "Home Sweet Home" location. Both sexes build the nest and collect mud, grass, and bark. They first construct a small platform to sit on, then start building the sides and forming the nest bowl shape. When the bird lays flat on their stomach using both legs in kicking action forming that perfect circle.
Located at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, New Jersey. Taken on July 7, 2018.
Camera settings: Manual, 1/1600sec, F8, ISO 2000. Camera: Nikon D7'100. Lens: Sigma Contemporary 150-600mm.
Black capped chickadees are more than irresistibly cute, they’re also perfectly adapted to thrive in the Colorado winters. Each winter, the memory storage portion of their brain (the hippocampus) expands up to 30% to help them remember all their sneaky food storage spots! #westminster#birdwatching#birdnerd#outdoorphotography
In between sessions on a larger painting, I did this quick little raven portrait, just for fun. 12x9", acrylic on Terraskin (tree-free paper). The original is available, and I've enabled prints and products in the POD shops (links in bio).
Nom nom nom
This amazing Arctic Tern is enjoying it’s snack. I miss seeing these awesome birds. I saw many of them in Anchorage this summer. But don’t underestimate these birds as just little cute birds. They undertake one of the longest journeys from pole to pole flying between Arctic and Antarctic region every year.
If you’re the non-voting “I don’t care about politics”/“politics don’t matter” type, why do you keep following me when you know that I absolutely fucking DESPISE you with every ounce of my soul? Fuck off far the fuck away from me. #osprey

I have a teenager on my hands! December 8th was Flash’s 13th hatch day! I still can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that this feathery little bundle of happiness, hilarity, and pure joy has been by my side for THIRTEEN YEARS. I say this every year, and honestly quite a lot throughout the entire 365 days that march on by on the regular, but I swear, my heart grows bigger with each passing moment he’s in my life. Flash fills me with such immense love for such a tiny thing - sometimes it’s overwhelming (but only in the best way possible). We celebrated by putting up lights outside and the Christmas tree inside, he got to play with the ornament boxes (his favorite!), and enjoyed warming his feathery little bum on the lights (as is his annual tradition). To top it off, he got to feast on broccoli, enjoyed all sorts of cuddles and pets, and wound down his night with snuggles and kisses against our necks. Oh Flash man, my little pookie doo, you sweet schnookie boy - I love you with all my heart and more. Happy hatch day, Flashy Pants! #flashtheparrotlet#kristinepaulsenphotography#canon#dslr#noniphone#pacificparrotlet#pacificparrotletsofinstagram#petbird#parrotsofinstagram#parrotlet#parrotletsofinstagram#birdsofig#christmasbirdie#ilovemybird#birdnerd#christmastree 🎄 #mybabybird
