“‘It must have been like watching someone on self-destruct.” I laughed awkwardly. But felt less awkward. ‘I’m not your friend because you entertain me,’ Darcy said.“
Queenie hasn’t been feeling in control lately. On a ‘break’ from her boyfriend, she finds herself with men who treat her as an exotic sex object. She can’t get the break she wants, writing #BlackLivesMatter articles for a posh (white) magazine. Instead, she spends her days avoiding prayers from her well-meaning family, and messaging her group chat ‘Corgis’. But who can help her when Queenie can’t help herself?
After seeing this book EVERYWHERE for months, and indeed working in the same office as the incredible Candice, I am deeply embarrassed it’s taken me this long to finish it AHH. (My excuse is that I don’t read hardbacks when travelling, so I could only read snippets of this as a treat when I was at home... excusesss). So I feel rather late to the party, but still.
Okay so. Queenie is having a crap time — the men in her life are ubiquitously repressed or AWFUL, she’s had childhood trauma that only comes out when she’s already feeling on her way to breaking down, and she is the only black person in her office, feeling the constant loneliness and pressure of that. That quote encapsulates: the horrible impotent sense of the reader watching Queenie hurt herself further, her attempts to joke away her pain, but also the redemptive support of her friends. Makes me really want a group chat of closest friends 🐕 (is that something everyone else has? Am I a friendless loser?) Queenie is a friend a think many of us can recognise: She has catastrophes in her life, which she represses and diminishes, but then she catastrophises everyday problems until she spirals. Spoiler alert, the only way she comes back to empowerment is therapy. At the end o the day, Queenie is a love letter to therapy, as well as to black girls everywhere. No wonder it’s been such a sensation. (Oh and Candice is going to be queen o the world soon.)
Which colour cover did you get? SUCH AN EYE-CATCHING IDEA HONESTLY BEST COVER OF 2019 🧡💙💚💗

Yesterday i hiked mount pierce and Eisenhower for my 12 & 13 on the #4000footer list! I met lots of people and dogs and wasn’t very well behaved but spend a lot of the way down training as punishment ! My friend ally finished her 48 and it was so exciting, I wonder if I’ll ever finish too!
