Maybe it’s just me but I feel like I’ve read a bunch of YA books set in Brooklyn lately. All sorts.... romance, memoir, fantasy about mermaids....(Coney Island is a whole thing. ) It’s an interesting place so it works for me. Shadowshaper is the first book in a trilogy. Our heroine is Sierra Santiago and she is a gifted young artist with deep roots in her neighborhood. She’s been commissioned by the old guys who play dominoes to paint a mural but she notices weird stuff happening to the other murals in the neighborhood. There is too much to explain here but it involves ancestors, zombies, folk magic, an unethical anthropologist and of course, that most important YA theme, finding your place in the world and being yourself. I very much enjoyed this book but I did get a little frustrated with people refusing to answer direct questions. I think this happens a lot in YA lit and it drives me nuts. Weird stuff is going on all around and people just keep saying “ now is not the time to talk about it”. Hate that. #readthisbook#brooklynbooks#gcslibrary#brooklyn
The top site of NYC graffiti and street-art culture is now in Brooklyn. The neighborhood of Bushwick has become known for all kinds of up-and-coming artists. Now it is also being recognized for a large and ever-growing graffiti exhibition: the Bushwick Collective. If you want to learn more about street art there and the artists behind it you can join a street art tour. I decided to join the Graffiti & Street Art Walking Tour organized by Brooklyn Unplugged Tours as it was part of the @newyorkpass which I bought prior to my trip meaning I saved $32 which is the usual price of the tour. In the 2 hours of the tour, we saw lots of street art around the area and learned a lot of interesting things and stories so I definitely recommend it if you're interested in street arts.
