Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

WHEN LIGE GIVES YOU LEMONS, MAKE A LEMON AND GINGER SHOT... 🍋 | It hasn’t been the best week for me this week but as I say to my clients, when life gets tough, that’s when it’s extra important to take care of yourself.
So with the weather turning colder and darker and more and more people coughing and sniffling around us, what better than to make this little shot.
My aim is to have it daily for a few months to help keep the colds at bay. Full of antioxidants such as vitamin c it can do wonders for your immune system. I juiced organic unwaxed lemons, plenty of ginger and around 1/2 apple per shot.
Something to be mindful of is that if you drink this on a daily basis, the acid can thin the enamel of your teeth, best is to drink it with a glass or metal straw.

A little lunch break date with my oils & my congestion. .
Someone told me the otherday maybe you are allergic to being 38 ha ha. It was my b'day on Monday & by the end of the day I was actually feeling a lil congested 😷 urgh

🦠Good immune health requires year-round work, but now is as good a time as ever to get prepared... .
👇Here are some tips to help you and your family stay well:
👉sleep - make sure you are getting 7-8 hours and your kids are getting 10-12 hours of quality sleep. Studies have shown sleep deprivation can reduce our immunity
👉nutrition: lots of phytonutrients from fruits and veggies. My top nutrients to boost immune health are: vitamin C (eg berries, cantaloupe, papaya, camu camu), vitamin A (eg carrots, sweet potato, kale) zinc (eg pumpkin seeds, watermelon seeds, legumes), vitamin E (eg nuts and seeds, avocado, oats), selenium (eg Brazil nuts, sesame seeds) and.. .
👉vitamin D - deserves its own point because it’s hard to get enough in the winter so I start supplementation right around now .
👉exercise - make sure you/your kids are moving for every day. Family walks, bike rides, a game. .
👉hydration - so important esp as the temperature cools and we forget to drink water. .
3 foods I have on hand for colds/flus:
✅elderberry - in one RCT (PMID 15080016) of 60 adults with flu-like symptoms those who took elderberry syrup 4x/day saw symptoms clear up on avr 4 days earlier than placebo.
✅Garlic- another RCT (PMID 22280901)of 120 people showed that after 90d of supplementing with an aged garlic extract, those in the treatment group had reduced severity and duration of cold symptoms. (Pro-tip: I crush my garlic and let it sit for 2-3 minutes then swallow whole. My kiddos do this too)
✅kimchi - this 🐁 study (PMID 29392562) showed Lactobacillus Plantarum (present also in other fermented foods like sauerkraut) - helped fight Influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes) .
Other tips include frequent hand washing with soap... and manage that stress 💥

Vitamin D - all your questions answered 🤓!
Where do we get vitamin D from 🤔?
UV-B rays are emitted by the sun ☀️, and hit our exposed skin, which converts a precursor to vitamin D into a slightly different precursor, which then travels to the liver & kidneys where it’s converted to active vitamin D. In summer months, spending around 15-20 minutes outside exposed to sunlight is enough for our bodies to make the vitamin D it needs.
In winter months, however, it’s so fucking dark and miserable in the UK 🥶 (and similar latitudes), and the sun is so low in the sky that there aren’t enough UV-B rays hitting our skin 🌨. In other words: your body can’t make the vitamin D.
You can find vitamin D in some foods, like oily fish 🐟, egg yolks🍳, and fortified foods. But it’s not enough. I know some of you want ‘natural’ sources and to that I say: tough shit 🤷🏼♀️ It’s not gonna happen.
Enter the supplement: now recommended by the NHS for everyone to take between October and April (ish).
How much do I need to take🤔?
Adults and children over 5 years old need at least 10ug (micrograms), although 25ug is also good, especially if you’re deficient. Keep it to below 100ug 👍🏻.
For breastfeeding babies and kids age 1-4: drops of 8-10ug.
Whatever you want. Honestly, I say go for the cheaper stuff in supermarkets and pharmacies. Pills,💊 drops, sprays 💦... do what you prefer. It all works!
I’m taking a multivitamin, do I need an extra vit D supplement🤔?
Check the packet. If it’s less than 10ug then yes, take vitamin D on top.
Why does it matter🤔?
Vitamin D is especially important for bones, teeth, and immune system. Deficiency leads to rickets in children or osteomalacia in adults. There’s also evidence linking vitamin D deficiency to a higher risk of catching colds 🤧 and SAD. Vitamin C won’t prevent colds, but D might 😉!
Not in the UK🤔?
Well, I don’t know your government guidelines 🤭, but I think if you live around the same latitude as the UK or higher: better safe than sorry.
