Throwback to a wedding invite I made last summer for two of my dear friends 😊
There are so many details that refer to the both of them, from the guitar of @rolfhupkes , the beetroot logo of @nienkenatuurlijk to the 'diamonds on the soles of her shoes' (the proposal was during a Paul Simon concert, how cool is that?!). I even illustrated their dancemoves from a filmstill 🕺
I really love making these personal custom cards. Whether I know the couple or just meeting them, there are always fun character details or cute stories that make people and their connection truly special ❤
Even more fun: I'm working on a new card for these two lovebirds, coming very soon!
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes, watercolor, 30 x 22 cm..
Have you heard the song by Paul Simon with the same phrase, "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"? I heard it very recently and was quite moved by the song, this painting is just a direct result! .
Sometimes I just do what moves me without really bothering about the selling aspect of the artwork and that actually keeps me happy as an artist! While I was pouring colors around her it really uplifted my mood 💃🥳....
Will it be called an original? It's completely inspired by the song😊, please share your thoughts 🙏
I'm listening to 'Graceland' again this morning and it's like I never left. This is where it started for me in so many ways. The first record I bought and I wouldn't have wanted any other. Graceland blends so many musical styles and shows masterful songwriting and lyricism, superb musicianship, amazing beats, harmonies and a unique style that sets it apart from nearly anything I've heard since. To say I love this album is an understatement. A few specials on this album for me are his collaborations with Boyoyo Boys on 'Gumboots, Los Lobos on 'All around the World', Ladysmith Black Mambazo on 'Homeless' and Linda Ronstadt on 'Under African skies'. Of course you can't go past the inventiveness of the rest of the album. The incredible 'You can call me Al' with that fretless bass solo you'll never forget and lyricism that still inspires me to this day. Another that inspires me with its brilliant songwriting by Joseph Shabalala and Paul Simon is 'Diamonds on the soles of her shoes'. Just quietly, it's my favourite and the blend of Simon's sweet vocals with Ladysmith Black Mambazo is just perfect. The lyrics are amazing and here's an example of what gets me so jazzed: "She was physically forgotten/ Then she slipped into my pocket/ with my car keys/ She said you've taken me for granted because I please you/Wearing these diamonds."
I have this album to thank for my love affair and appreciation of all types of music, from rock to folk to country to jazz to funk to classical to R'n'B to electronic to soul to (you can see what I'm getting at). Music is so wide ranging, all around the world it gets us feeling, moving, shaking, dancing, grooving, humming, tapping, singing, playing, writing. It's all so different and creative, coming from individual souls but it ends up connecting us. #paulsimon#graceland#gracelandalbum#youcancallmeal#music#musicstyle#diamondsonthesolesofhershoes#80smusic#worldmusic#lindaronstadt#loslobos#ladysmithblackmambazo#boyoyoboys#popmusic#firstrecord#josephshabalala#songwriting#lyricism#musicianship
It's been an insanely busy year for weddings. Tons of friends, friends of friends, everyone's falling in love. Having to re-expand the whole entire site to fit them all... Hopeless love forthcoming. #diamondsonthesolesofhershoes
I’ve wanted to share this for a while. It makes me smile. This is actually an ‘audition tape’ for a Simon and Garfunkel musical for which we put together the choreography and vocal arrangements. We put this together and low and behold we got offered the job! In fact the feedback was ‘...we had a lot of entries and we just loved your arrangements, vocal blend and performances.
Thank you for a fabulous audition!’ 😍🎶💃🏼 We smashed it and I was so proud of our team work. As it happens we turned the offer down as there was a lot going on at the time, it wasn’t meant to be, but this footage reminds me of fun singing times with my beautiful friends. #singers#vocaltrio#harmonytrio#sessionsingers#coral#dancemoves#femaletrio#simonandgarfunkel#simonandgarfunkelstory#meandjulio#diamondsonthesolesofhershoes
Dancing at Sahnia on Valentines Day, to a phenomenal set by Norman Jay. Such a superstar and a true gentleman! I interviewed him years ago and ten years later he remembered me. On this particular night he played an incredible Minnie Riperton track. I recognised her voice and couldn’t place the song so he kindly passed on the info so I could search for it. Superstar. @normanjaymbe
A banged out security van pops up in the side of the gas station. A bearded man with a fag butt sticking out of his mouth. I ask if he has space for a passenger. He mumbles something and fumbles about with some stuff on the dashboard and starts to re arrange the cabin. I take it as an invitation, so I walk around and throw my bag into the back, onto a pile of plastic jerry cans, papers and blankets. He goes out to tank the car and I watch the snowfall settling on the window. Various paraphernalia, batteries, spanners, candy wrappers, tobacco pouches, loose leaves, bolts and cables. Jackets, hi viz, shoes, rubber bands, an open bag of cash, and various bottles; medicine, tablets and orangeade. “This gonna be an interesting fuckin’ ride” he says, as we crunch on the white wind swept tarmac.
I tell him I am going to America. “Fuck that man, fucking crazy fuckers. Watch out over there, and for the police, they wont leave you alone until they get their money. Corrupt fucking assholes, you should stay in Canada man”
He pulls over to throw some snow at the windscreen to clean it, and then whacks a dusty Paul Simons cassette into the cassette player.
Miss you more everyday, Madeline. I’m definitely not an expert in gardening. I am sure that Madeline laughed at me all day. In the rain, then it got sunny. I don’t really remember all the races that much. I do, a bit. I remember talking to her after each race, encouraging her for the next one. I remember that she used to always ask me if I ate well the day before and how my run went that day. I remember just how happy she always was. Most importantly, I remember the bond that we made because of our shared passion. She was, and still remains, one of the most thoughtful individuals I’ve ever known. #diamondsonthesolesofhershoes
🎶💎She’s got diamonds on the soles of her shoes💎🎶 #paulsimon#diamondsonthesolesofhershoes 💍💍💍 Here is a bride doing what she wants, her way & fabulous! Are you ready to do that too?
💥Do you feel free to be yourself? To ask for what you want? Do you even KNOW what you want?💥
People say the wedding is the Bride’s Day - and I am a firm believer that all women are Goddesses. But stepping into your power takes practice.
If you’re not used to having every day as “your day” how do you step into that with pleasure, instead of awkwardness? Without bouncing between being demanding and apologetic?
💥What are the instructions for stepping into power?💥

Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.- Nelson Mandela Happy 16th Birthday to my Olivia! The one who made me a father. You are a peacemaker in name and in action. You inject fun, energy, connection and peace into every atmosphere you enter. You are talented, intelligent, thoughtful, considerate and mature beyond your years. I met your mother when we were 18. Only two years older than you. In you I see so many of the traits that made me fall in love with her. Thank God you are more like her than me. Happy Birthday Olivia, Liv, Bossy First Born, Peacemaker, and Miss Tidewell. #Livis16#drivingsoon#diamondsonthesolesofhershoes
♥️The best part about being a sensitive woman is not being afraid to feel it all. This shift in my journey is aligning everything perfectly even though it hurts. I am inspired. I am open to all experience. I am a woman who is receptive to all that the universe has to offer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
♥️Today has been such a healing day for me. I began with an intense vinyasa practice then taught a beautiful foundations class. Afterwards, I sat in the yoga studio after everyone left and bathed myself with chakra crystal singing bowls. The vibration was incredible as it sifted through my veins, my breath, and into my heart. I’ve never really felt anything like it before. Then I sat and chanted healing mantras that echoed on the walls back into my body. I love to sing. Did you know that? 🎵 But the most incredible part was sitting completely still in silence. All alone and taking everything in. The body high was beyond incredible as I soaked in the presence of healing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
♥️One of the oldest texts in yoga is The Vedas which says “the cure to suffering is stillness & silence.” I have arrived here before in my past, but today it was different. I felt as though I were floating in a realm of peace & calm. I connected with all that is greater than me. I am whole. I am powerful. I am deeply loved by myself and my community. Even though this is a time of heartbreak for me... I am so ready for all that is to come. I haven’t felt like this in years & I am so grateful for the challenge which will bring me back home to myself. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
♥️Tonight I will be empowered by a group of amazing women where we will gather together around fire 🔥 and sing our truth. I will be nourished with uplifting love, light, & laughter with strong feminine energy. Thank you life for the challenges, the tears, the heartbreak, and the mountains which I will climb to sing my truth. 🏔
🙏🏻She has risen and will continue to rise. 💪🏻

Wild is the Wind is a track on the new Steve Larkman Album 'Cover In A Week Session' Released by Hilton and Nick Rosenthal's Split Sounds.Hilton co-produced Paul Simon's GRACELAND also Carol King and Harry Belafonte #islandinthesun#diamondsonthesolesofhershoes#tapestry
Paul’s masterpiece that blended American and African music into one beautiful collection of songs. The album features African artists that showcase the eclectic variety of sounds coming out of its respective countries, and much of the album was recorded in Johannesburg. It’s sprawling with all sorts of sounds and colors that were completely untouched by American popular music like isicathamiya and mbaqanga of Southern Africa. Along with 1990’s The Rhythm of the Saints, this is my favorite Paul Simon album.
PAUL SIMON: GRACELAND (1986)
