【The Bamboo Forest】⠀
Another week, another Monday. Amidst the hustle, a good friend reminded me to just slow down. Sometimes all we need is to breathe and soak in moment.⠀
As I breathed, I recounted my memory through the valley in the Bamboo Forest. After a hectic day of traveling in Kyoto in an attempt to check off my bucket list at the age of 19, I looked around was greeted a silent gust of wind, accompanied by these graceful bamboo pillars which shift back and forth in the wind 🍃, creating a rhythmic gentle breeze in the atmosphere around it. In it, I find my peace.
Sending some peaceful vibes out there to start the week! What is your Monday story? 😉
Em, 🖤.

Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka: a Historical Alleys in Kyoto. Two of Kyoto’s most attractive streets

Higashi Hongan-Ji Temple is one of the largest wooden buddhist temple in the world and designated as UNESCO's world heritage site. But I call it 'wind temple' because it was oddly windy in the vicinity of the temple compared to the streets outside the temple. I had a feeling that maybe the gods want me out of the temple or is it just me? 😅

When I got off the nearest bus stop, I was amazed by the look of the solemn temple 😳 It’s such a perfect pagoda and the combination of pine trees is always superb 🙌🏼🇯🇵
What's nice about rainy days is how the colors are more vibrant and as if the whole world is in high contrast and high saturation. Have u noticed that too?

Arashiyama has way more to offer than just the bamboo forest (although that is quite pretty, too). The whole area is beautiful, and the district has many little shops selling Japanese sweets and other delicious foods.
Shimogamo Jinja Shrine, Kyoto. The snow has now passed and it will soon be springtime!

知恩院 Chion-in (法然上人御廟:Gobyo) We recommend climbing up the many steps to the highest place in the Temple precinct to look out over Kyoto early in the morning. It is so peaceful, especially in winter time.

Shisen-dō Jōzan-ji Temple｜詩仙堂丈山 is only a 15 minute walk from Guesthouse Chayama. Sit in the tatami mat rooms facing the gardens and slowly take in the tranquil surroundings of this wonderful little hermitage. Take a peak inside here.

(Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple) This delightful little temple, even further off the beaten track and hidden in the hills of western Arashiyama, is most famous for its collection of 1200 Rakan statues that represent the disciples of the historical Buddha. It was a fun place to be, looking at all the different expressions. Scroll through the photos to see some of them!

(Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple) We were off the beaten track, and as such, the only people at this lesser-known bamboo grove in Kyoto this morning. It was stunning.

Kōtō-in Zen Temple, Kyoto (within the grounds of the Daitoku-ji Temple complex) is a masterpiece of elegant simplicity. (Kōtō-in Temple is easily accessible from both of our guesthouses.
