Just a little reminder of one from the summer before last - it was a commission - I never usually get to paint this big - what do people who paint big all the time do with their work until its exhibited or sells?
I have one other one this size on the go right now different subject though so watch this space!
A few weeks ago @happy_finn_whale and I headed out to the windy wilds of Northumberland to see Dunstanburgh Castle. That John of Gaunt really knew how to live, bit breezy mind. When I get my own gaffe I'd definitely like a giant gatehouse keep.
This one’s an old one. Thought I’d posted it here before but apparently not. The pillbox I saw up on Bewick Hill reminded me of this one next to Dunstanburgh Castle. No invasions likely now - the danger here is from golf balls. 😊
recognised, perhaps more as a symbol of his opposition to the king than as a military stronghold.
Unfortunately the earl failed to reach Dunstanburgh when his rebellion was defeated, and was taken and executed in 1322. Thereafter the castle passed eventually to John of Gaunt, who strengthened it against the Scots by converting the great twin towered gatehouse into a keep.
The focus of fierce fighting during the Wars of the Roses, it was twice besieged and captured by Yorkist forces, but subsequently fell into decay
I spent the first hours of the new year taking photos of this castle. Not a bad way to start the year.

Old Pictures, New Cameras. There are versions of this on my feed taken with a Sony RX10, Panasonic FZ1000, Canon 5D, Fuji X100S and probably a few others. This was with a Fuji XT1 which is officially on the Never Sell list
