I read something this morning that made me realise what keeps me happy and smiling. I romanticise my life. I make a cup of coffee in the morning and savour it, like it’s the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had. It’s gone in less than five minutes, but it’s these little daily rituals that count. I open the front door in my bare feet and step outside to drink in the view. I sing along to songs in the car every day, with my very best, loudest singing voice (I am utterly tone deaf.) It’s so easy to look at other people’s lives and think they seem perfect. The truth is that this is one of the hardest times of the year for me, I dread this period. I don’t wake up every morning feeling fantastic when my alarm goes off at 5:30. I make a conscious effort to be grateful, to look forward to the little things. The thought of a hot shower with my favourite scents filling the steamy air and a cup of delicious coffee propel me out of bed. I make these moments and when I get the chance to whisk myself off somewhere that’s going to fill my heart with happiness, I do it. The last thing I felt like doing this morning was driving an hour to the coast, but I did, and it was worth every second spent in the car. Self care isn’t buying into products and potions, it’s finding the happiness in your day to day. The mundane and the ordinary is what fills most of our days, but when those small things are exciting and you really take pleasure from them, that’s when you really start living.
