It’s almost February already! Which means I’m less than a month away from production of @littleofftopic which I’ll be shooting 3 episodes of in Chicago. I’m working on the detailed design aspects of the future website and potential app development. ALSO! I’m shooting a small “how to” series on basic newcomer skills like How to install Wordpress on your machine.
Frankly speaking, when your program does more than one thing at the same time. In computer science, concurrency is one of the most complex topics.
Concurrency vs. Parallelism
Those two are usually considered the same term, but in reality, those are two different terms. 🔸Concurrency refers to when multiple operations are making progress during the same time period. But it does not mean that you take place at exact same time. 🔹 Parallelism is when multiple operations are making progress at the exact same time.
So imagine that we as humans cannot multitask anymore. We can only read or eat, we can’t do two things at the same time. In reality, we can drive and talk.

Working on benchmarking the code to train the video classification model (link in bio), exploring performance on different GPUs. 💪
It’s really fun actually – and easy.. I’m using the unit test framework in #matlab , so I can just call runperf() on my tests targeting different hardware. I might look into the mocking framework to mock different setups, hardware, etc – super powerful! 💪
It’s taking awhile (runs multiple times for timing) so I have something to check on during meetings 😂
Je cherche juste à susciter leurs intérêts ^^! ⠀
PS : Je prends bien sûr également 70% des futures révolutions technologiques qu'ils et elles réaliseront ^^ !⠀
Siblings we are three days away from demo day!😱😳
We already have the take-a-way wishlist (if you don't know what we are talking about go ahead and read yesterday's post...) Today, we are focusing on the visuals 📊📈.
You may have heard that a picture is worth a thousand words... We think this statement is completely true!✅ Instead of fatiguing the Product Owner with lines of code by going through the whole script, our approach is to create an image that summarizes the process of our product👩🏻🎨👩🏽🎨.
Normally, we try to tell a story with the image. Our story usually goes around the lines of:
1) Summary: Explanation of the product and its relevance.
2) Input: What is the input and how does the input gets fed to the script?
3) Process: What happens to the input? (explain in a high level the logic of the script)
4) Output: What is the result after running the whole script? Why is this result what the Product owner wanted?
5) Conclusion: Point out the specific aspects that meet the Acceptance Criteria
At this point, the product owner knows what you are talking about and also what to expect from your live run!😊 Now the scene is set! Go ahead and showcase your code💻
Oh, before we forget, of course we don't get too fancy for creating the image, simple tools such as MS PowerPoint and MS Visio do the trick👩🏻💻👩🏽💻!
What do you Siblings think about this approach? -We will be reading you in the comments!💕
As always, be awesome!🌸

Have you ever noticed that some people are more fond of writing messages and letters and in every way avoid direct conversation, but a simple call can help solve current issues many times faster.😏
Considering that today most of the programs are created specifically in teams — for programmers, communication skills are very important, as one of the components of soft skills.☝
It is very difficult to be a team player without interpersonal communication skills (the ability to ask questions, listen to and hear the other, and reasonably express your opinion). Therefore, you need to develop your soft skills in order to stay in good relations with colleagues and get results from teamwork.💫
Did you know that you could hack an AI system to make it output the wrong thing? An easy way to do that is to start at the training process and simply feed it wrong data: like labeling a everything as a cat. I wouldn't mind that actually.
Another way, a bit more imaginative, is to corrupt images that we are trying to label. If you take a dog image, and that you slowly change it's pixel to correspond to a cat images until you can only see the cat, the network would label lit as... a dog.
Crazy right?! It's with things like this that it is easy to show people how we are not even near replicating the full depth of the human intelligence in an algorithm ! Still afraid of an AI apocalypse ? I could also be an AI trying to convince you otherwise...
I am not a robot, I swear and I was taught to never lie 😉.

What are you guys currently reading? 👩🏽🏫
I’m reading “The Road Ahead” by Bill Gates. 📚
I promise I’m awake, and not taking a nap; eventhough, that would be nice right now, lol. 😂
So far, it’s been really interesting! ✨
In the first chapter, it felt like going back in time and learning how computers started. ⏰
Also, today was my first day of Winter Session 2020. ☃️
It’s about to be hectic, ahh! 😵
There’s going to be tests every week, quizzes every single day. 😫
No time to procrastinate whatsoever. 😢
But, it’ll be worth it in the end! 😇
Good luck to everyone beginning a new job or a new session/quarter/semester depending on what your college follows! You got this! 🤗
Let me know below what you’re currently reading or how your first day of work/school went. ⬇️

Another one of our programs includes: Think Like a Programmer - Journey Workshop.
Start your computer science journey with women in the field! Girls will connect with computer science, & uncover the skills it takes to think like a programmer!
I hear you sister... balans är enormt viktigt! Jag letar också efter det. Tack för idag Johanna 🙏🏼🌟! Hoppas att vi ses snart igen.
So why not make the most of it and design your own concept for a #smartwatch app?

Facebook has come a long way since its humble beginning as a way for college students to connect, to be the largest social media network in the world. Today it’s considered a powerful marketing tool and an affordable, yet effective way to grow your brand✨
During the Future of Artificial Intelligence Breakfast at Sydney Parliament House this portrait of the Queen captured my attention - it made me ponder about the future of power and humanity.
For the first time in history we are in a moment when power is served to those who seek it though leveraging the growth and capabilities of the internet. You see the power that social platforms have to lift leaders who have never had a voice, like activist Greta Thunberg.
You see the power of technology when young, dreaming, innovators can launch a multi billion dollar tech company from a garage.
And you see a change in the power of humanity when newly implemented artificial intelligence is on display.
We stand in a moment in time when power is defined as something mostly understood, but with AI on our doorstep it begs the question, ‘what will power mean for humanity in the future’?

Can I get a 🙄 for "those" accounts? Let's show them it's already 2020!
I've been on Instagram for slightly over a year, and it really warms my heart 🥰 to see so many female programmers.
That's why I'm not happy to see those tasteless "girl's can't code" memes. It's not "just a joke" when it mocks someone for lacking knowledge because they did not have access to it.
When we build tech, we build it for people, and I'm very sure not everyone is a white man with access to further education and who is unhindered by the glass ceiling.
Tech NEEDS diversity, so that we can build solutions that benefit more than just the majority race and gender. Computers 💻 don't discriminate between the code of a man and that of a woman - why should we?

Let's be real... building a career is not easy. And a straight, linear career path is usually unheard of and yet, it is the story we hear about the most.
The more often but less spoken story is that careers are squiggly. Especially in the digital space where the landscape is constantly shifting.
What do you want to achieve in your career this year? What about this decade? Great careers don't just happen, they are created through design, planning, and self determination.
In two weeks time, we will be hosting an event in Brisbane with three panelists whose careers have not been linear. They have gone down pathways and then pivoted massively! Take @zoecaplenblack for example - she spent years working her way up as a Communications Specialist and carved a very impressive career for herself in that space working for very successful mining and and civil engineering companies. And now? She is the co-founder and CEO of @happypawshappyhearts - a purpose-driven organisation connecting the socially isolated with rescue animals.
Zoe is just one of our amazing panellists sharing her squiggly career story. Click the link in our bio for more info about the event.

Oh where, oh where, can my photos be?
Surprise - I deleted them all!
It's a new year and I am working on so many exciting new things and projects. It called for fresh start!
This time five months ago I didn't know anything at all about machine learning 💻. Fast forward to now, I'm learning more about it every single day. I'm finally using machine learning (unsupervised learning) functions and packages on R. My ➡️ aim is to not limit myself and therefore be able to use both matlab and R for machine learning.
I'm trying to learn two languages at once and it's harder than expected 🤐🙋🏽♀️ . .
Feeling a lack of support for your dream? Maybe people around you just don’t really understand. Or maybe it’s your current boss or colleagues who are less than encouraging about your work. Either way, lack of support can feel pretty discouraging!
Having dealt with this situation myself I used to frequently ask myself "I'm doing my very best here, how can I possibly get my boss to change his mind about my efforts?" 🤔 The short answer is, I couldn't. I could only change my own reaction to how I handled this rocky situation. 💡 And as it turned out, it ended up being one of the best moments of my career. (really!) 🙋🏼♀️ Have you ever dealt with lack of support with those close to you or at work? How did you handle it? ⭐️ LINK IN BIO to inspire you to keep on going and turn those haters into SELF-MOTIVATORS!!
Yesterday we did a little break from our debugging sessions 👾 to talk about the company culture 😬. One thing that I really admire about the culture at Google are their values: 1)Task Ownership 📌2) Risk taking ⛰3) Blameless approach (if something goes wrong) 🙂4) Postmortem analysis (to understand why it went wrong) 💀5) Communication 🥰 I was talking about this with my mentor (she takes care of the company culture in Google Ams) and she told me something very cool: “Monica, if you are going to fail, fail. But fail fast”. 💜And I really like applying it! I don’t mind taking the risk to start new projects, and if they fail, cool! I’ll learn from it and iterate. But I do think there is something about at least trying that makes it worthy 🤗❤️

What do I do at Lemonade?
I’m a backend engineer on our Boost 🚀squad. My team and I work on things like: partnerships with other companies through our API, launching in new US states, and perfecting our product for renters and homeowners 🏡. If you’re in the US and are a policyholder or have gotten a quote, that’s my team 🎉
Recently, I’ve been working on building an important new feature that our partners will use through our API. I’m working closely with our data science team to make it as accurate and fast as possible. And am also in close communication with our biz dev team in NY and our partners’ engineers to make sure things are going as planned ✅
Typically I leave work mentally exhausted 😅. But I love it. Every day brings new challenges and I’m constantly learning and growing. And on top of that, I love and really believe in what we’re doing ✨ (If you haven’t yet heard of @lemonade_inc, you should check it out)
🧁 Efficient code review 🧁
Having a team code review is crucial for an overall improvement of the code quality;
So here are some tips that I found to implement efficient code review:
🔸 Review fewer than 400 lines of code at a time
🔹Do not review for more than 60 minutes at a time
🔹 Ask submitter to checklist thing he/she wanted to cover
🔸 set goals
🔹 Do not be passive-aggressive in your comments
🔸 Encourage positive review culture
🔹 Do not make anybody to feel stupid
