Been a bit quiet on here while enjoying the summer holidays down in New Zealand. Rang in 2020 in Byron Bay and have been playing tour guide for friends from Ireland, Brazil and the UK here in Auckland.
Spent this week planning the 2020 trips and safe to say it's going to be another incredible year of wildlife and nature based adventures across 3 continents. My goal for this year is to make it to my 50th country! 6 to go and I have 5 already planned, what country should lucky number 50 be?!
Looking forward to this upcoming year. Feeling a bit anxious but also excited and ready for new challenges. I’m not really into new year resolutions but am going to try this new thing which is more about yearly theme. My theme this year would be about personal growth and upskilling myself 💪🏼 #readyfor2020#youcandoit

Made 'butter' tofu and lentils from @connoisseurusveg. Would recommend and I actually used the cardamom that's been sat in my cupboard 😁

It’s been awhile since I’ve felt truly fired up, excited and alive ALL THE WAY DOWN TO MY CORE🔥🔥 — but that’s the feeling I have right now after @styledyou_ Texas. I sometimes wonder why I invest in these things when I’m not your typical full-time photographer, and then I remember this feeling. Some people go on wellness retreats, and instead I indulge in CREATIVE WELLNESS. .
Thank you to all of the wonderful women I met this week. Whether instructor or attendee, you all opened up my heart and mind this week in small and big ways (uhm hi to me crying my eyes out at @laurkenkendall’s talk👋🏼👋🏼). I left Texas completely whole and I won’t forget this feeling❤️ EXTRA SPECIAL thanks to @maeandco_creative, y’all are freaking MAGIC✨ — I’m taking a big leap soon, stay tuned for more 🙌🏼

Second day and second advice.
Try to get to the temple early in the morning so you will avoid the crowds and the heat!
Depression & anxiety have been lurking around lately (assholes) but this was the perfect spot to reflect & gain some clarity.
It’s hard to pull yourself out of a funk sometimes. It’s easier to focus on the negative things than it is the positive things.
Breathe. Think about all the good things you’ve got going for you. Just focus on that. ❤️

[Press Trip] What a busy week and the weekend has flown over already 🙈. Had such a good weekend already, from seeing Slipknot on Friday to afternoon with the girls today, but boy I need a rest day after being back from Brussels 🙈
I am back in a routine though, so there is a perk. Back to full normality next week and trying not to eat everything in sight 🐷🌚, but then again it is restaurant week in Newcastle next week 🙄
Now that I am a year older, I think about how much wiser I am. 🎂 I was always afraid to get older but now I embrace that feeling that I am. I became an unapologetic woman and I can easily recognize things that aren’t good for me anymore or isn’t helping me gain valuable momentum in growth.
I always did want to reach this stage of my life where I can feel okay with myself (how I look, how I do things my way, how I want to take care of myself - physically, spiritually, and mentally, how I speak my mind). I am also unapologetic in who I am as a person. I was told by a few that I have a lot of “energy” in me as if that was a bad thing. What I learned as I grew is that not everyone is going to like you for you and that is nothing to worry about... because as long as you are a positive force of nature that others hope for in some way through life, you will continue to make an impact whether it’s being a leader, a best friend, a child, a partner, etc. And if so, keep doing that. That’s living for a purpose!
It’s been a crazy ride of what one year alone can have. What 365 days can do. Or even what few years can do... you’re going to have to navigate life through many hurdles and these all lead you to paths that will build YOU with confidence and clarity. 🌎 I do not want to go back to being younger and I would love to stay with this mentality and actually embrace who I am going to be as I age. #postbirthday#SanDiego#loveyourself
The following pics are from #CabrilloNationalMonument , a monument that commemorates Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, first European to navigate the west coast, and it’s situated on top of a cliff that overlooks the whole city of San Diego. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is the highest point on there. The views are beautiful!

Me 🤝 forcing the person I travel with to pose like they’re my boyfriend. Cologne? Lived it, loved it for the first few hours, farewell to it. Our day has been full of exploring I can say that much but it’s not everything I completely imagined it to be.

It was 15:40 when I ran to the luggage check-in. Our flight was leaving at 16:05...
We were supposed to leave around 11, but our driver was more than an hour late because of the traffic.
From Amed there its a 3hours plus drive to Denpasar. Cars usually go with max 40km/h. Well, our driver speeded, we even reached 100. Still, on the highway, we just stayed in line, for more than 40 min. We were joking that we'll see our plane above us soon.
Of course, the moment we landed we said we have to miss our flight back and stay more on the island. Faced with the reality I started looking for accommodation and thinking about how long we should stay :)) I even asked the driver to wait for us.
"it was a terrible traffic, can you please call someone and let is pass? The system is closed, I can't check your luggage. It's ok, its cabin size anyway..." Few more minutes of explanations and persuasion and the flight crew let us go, try to catch the plane. Good that I know the airport well enough and passed all security, shops and everything just to arrive in the line before it ended. We were the last ones to board, but we made it!
Only to arrive in Hong Kong and... That's another story! ✈️ Have you ever missed a plane? ✈️

Self portrait of someone in a really awkward position who is pretending to be comfortable
I just got back from visiting Cuba! Due to the complicated relationship between the United States and Cuba, not many U.S. citizens get to opportunity to travel to Cuba. So I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had the chance to visit Cuba through my university! Cuba has such a rich and beautiful culture and I loved learning about it!
Have you ever experienced having non ideal things come up during a trip? Haven’t we all 😂 .
In this photo I’m not looking too cute, I’m soaked from the rain and I’m wearing a dorky poncho 🤷🏻♀️ .
In 2020 I want to post more realistic and imperfect content. I don’t want you guys to have the impression that travel is always glamorous and that things go according to plan every day. Because let me tell you that is far from the truth. 😂 That’s part of what I love about travelling. Being put in uncomfortable situations yet you always have a choice. You can either choose to have the worst time or just rough it out and choose to still have the best time despite the circumstances given to you. .
Take these photos for example, We were supposed to have a nice walking tour through the streets of Hanoi. We still had a walking tour all right, but we were hit with some horrible weather. Our tour guide had to go and buy us some colourful ponchos to wear. It was raining so hard, that my shoes became soggy and soft. They were so tender at this point that as I was walking, I had a nail pierce right through my shoe directly to my foot. 😳😢 I had forgotten to wear proper shoes because I was not anticipating this strong rain. Yet did I choose to let that stop me from continuing to enjoy the experience? That’s a NO for me! I limped my way through the rest of the walking tour and we still made it in time to watch the water puppet show that night. With a few minutes to spare if I might add 😉 it’s all about mind set and making the best out of the situation. Plus I got to see some pretty lanterns at the market place as an added bonus 🙌🏼 .
Hi new peoples! I’m Kay ✌🏽💕
I noticed that there’s like a handful of new people so I’ll take time out of MY EXTREMELY BUSY DAY (I’m kidding I’m not doing anything lol) to introduce myself! If you’ve been following for a while, thanks for putting up with my spelling errors hahah. If you’re new - WELCOME! Expect spelling errors 🤡
Soooo about me: THE CONDENSED VERSION! I’m a military brat, but born and mostly raised in California, USA! I am a fiction author (“TW: Flatline” on Amazon!), I can recite the periodic table, I work in a job that doesn’t use any of my degrees, I’ve totaled one car in an accident, only went through chemo once (🤞🏽), and I hate water because it’s cold. 🥶
I started The Awkward Traveller when I was living out of my car. I don’t make any profits from Instagram, and if I do an ad or sponsored post, I funnel the money back into my non-profit “The Global Dreamers Foundations,” whose focus is to sponsor travel experiences for young adults in underserved communities. I’m also addicted to junk food 🍭
I take FOREVER to talk in-depth about the places I visit (this picture is from...Sept 2019). Sorry, I’m slow. And probably distracted by the Sims haha. But if you have any questions about a specific place, feel free to ask! In fact, I hope you always feel comfortable reaching out or commenting, whether you agree with me or not! 🤗
Okay this is getting too long. I also talk too much. Uhh what else what else...I like pineapple on pizza.🍍
Picking up the camera again, after an unintentional hiatus.
This week (and past few months) have been some of the most exhausting of my career so far.
I worked on a major project and it drained every ounce of time, energy and resource that I had.
Today I finally had a few hours outside, listened to podcasts and took some photos. And I started to remember who I was before this project landed on my desk.
I've learned a lot, but I'm glad it's over. Now I can be intentional with my time and energy again.
And more importantly I can get back to being a functioning human, better friend, better partner and healthier human.
I'm 18 days late, but I feel like 2020 has finally started 🙌❤️💥
Ps- All podcast recommendations welcome below!

Misty mornings at the beautiful Ulun Danu Temple✨
This is definitely my favorite temple in Bali, located in the middle of lake Bratan makes it a truly unique place to visit🤩
Besides exploring the beautiful grounds and gardens surrounding it, you can also rent this canoe 🚣🏻♀️ called “jukung” for $7 to row around the lake which is really fun 😊
💡We arrived around 8am and we had the place to ourselves so it was a perfect time to enjoy the place ✨

Exploring beautiful Florence🕌
The Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral or better known as the Duomo is one of the main places to visit during your visit to Florence. Built in the late 13th century it took 200 years to complete and it is the third largest in the world 🤩
💡Tip to visit: access to the cathedral is free and opens at 10 am, however if you want to have access to the rest of its monuments including the dome, baptistry, bell tower, crypt and museum you have to buy an €18 ticket 🏷 that you can do either online or at the box office on site
🚶🏽♀️The line for the cathedral gets very long for its free access so it’s better to arrive before opening time to avoid the long wait in line. If you want a relatively empty picture here as well, you should arrive around sunrise because the plaza gets crowded very early with pedestrians and souvenir stalls

In front of me is the water palace #JalMahal in the Pink City of #Jaipur at sunrise. The city was still quiet around this time but there were a lotttttt of cheeky monkeys around 🐒 so hold onto your belongings if you’re planning to watch the sunrise here 🤣

The beautiful Pink Mosque in #Putrajaya#Malaysia 🙏🏻 I know this might seem odd to some (considering how much I’m in front of the camera) but sharing photos like these on my public channel where I’m this close to the camera is a bit gut wrenching for me. When I work with brands that choose my close-up photo as the sponsored post, I always have that big OH NO moment before I push it live. It’s probably because as my channel grew over the past few years, my images would get shared on other pages and platforms and I started noticing and allowing other people’s comments about the way I look/pose/dress ...get to me. It’s also because we live in a world now where cosmetically or digitally altering our faces is so accessible. Heck, I even went to a specialist for a skin check-up and was advised to consider botox to slim and soften the shape of my face 😅 But today I read a blog post from @thelilynews that I loved so much that said: “With every new year comes talk of change. We often hear the phrase ‘new year, new me’ but this year I don’t want there to be a ‘new me’. I am obsessed with the thought of change. I’m constantly trying to be someone new, someone better. I spent so long consumed by the idea that I can do better that for a long time I didn’t realise that what I was really doing was telling myself I’m not good enough. Change is an inevitable process in all our lives. It is something we should welcome, not fear. But if you find yourself unhappy even after you make changes then maybe you’re picking the wrong motivations to change? If I never think I’m good enough...how will I be happy with myself? I want my motivation to change to start coming from a good place of LOVE for myself, not self-loathing. I want to learn how to accept myself as I am. That’s why this year, there will be no ‘new me’...there will just be me” 😌 so hey world, this is me ✌🏻
