Great Blasket Island (An Blascaod Mór), is the largest of the Blasket Islands. It was abandoned by it's final 22 inhabitants in 1953 but once boasted a population of 175 which declined due to emigration. This island and the life of it's people was made famous by Peig Sayers who wrote in Irish an historical record and literary gem about her life on the island. Grassy paths, hilly tracks, pre-historic remains and extraordinary wildlife make this island one of Ireland's precious jewels.
One for the bucket list, my mother read “20 years a growing” to me as a child, written in the 1930s about life in the Irish speaking Blasket Islands around the turn of the 20th century. Incredibly preserved and a beautiful spot at the furthest reaches of Western Europe, well worth the 2 day wait for boats #blasketislands#greatblasket#atlantic#wildatlanticway#islands#ireland
