Happy #ClassroomToCareer Day!
Thank you Angie (@rentonschools and @uofwa), for sharing how your classroom experiences have translated to job skills: "At Lindbergh, being part of the robotics team taught me how to collaborate effectively with other people in order to get the job done well. I've learned that this is an important skill to have because it often allows you to step out of your comfort zone and take on new tasks that give you the opportunity to learn more than you expected at first. I find that being able to acquire new knowledge is a rewarding feeling, and I would highly encourage seeking new opportunities to do so."
What do you use from your K-12 education (academic, social, leadership, etc.) in your current career? Share your answer on social media today and don't forget to tag us!
PhD Proposal Draft Submitted = Celebratory Drinks. This journey has taught me to celebrate the benchmarks along the way. It may have only been an early step...but it felt like a “one small step” moment when I hit “send”

CLU had the pleasure to work once more with "You Are Loved" muralist, Alex Cook at CLU's 9th annual gathering. Students, faculty, and staff gathered around to create CLU's very own "You Are Loved" mural that will be displayed in CLU's new building later this year. It was reported some 60% graduates are still unemployed one year after completing their bachelor's degree.
Industry says "Courses offered at universities should be periodically reviewed, revised or improved where possible to produce marketable graduates who can contribute to business, economic and social development."
So how are public universities reacting to this situation and how are they reassessing and reshaping programmes offered?

It's #WorldFoodDay , which is a focus more on nutritional quality. And it so happens that our own Rose Deneen, a culinary arts instructor at Moraine Valley is a finalist in the 2019 Midwest Independent Publishing Association’s 29th annual Book Awards for her book "Baking with Vegetables". The awards recognize quality in independent publishing in the 12-state Midwest region. “Roughly 30 of the 51 recipes are brand new that I developed,” she said. “I thought about what I could do with beets, cauliflower and so on and created them as I went along.” A second cookbook for those who need a gluten-free diet, is underway, and Deneen is contemplating a vegan cookbook, as well. “I’m very proud of this accomplishment,” she said. “It’s never been on my radar to write a book. I blended my marketing background with my baking experience, and it all came together. It was a lot of hard work, but very rewarding.” Deneen oversees the college’s Baking and Pastry Program, teaching hands-on classes on basic baking principles and pastry preparation for cakes, breads, cookies, frozen desserts and other baked goods, along with menu planning, cost controls, marketing, nutrition, sanitation, and food preparation and production. #HealthyDiets#zerohunger
My hands were shaking. My voice wavering. I had never been so nervous.
These pictures are from my dissertation defense. Four years ago. The lead up to this had been several years of study and a completed research project. Now I was tasked with this final act: the defense. Sounds really aggressive right? DEFENSE.
Nonetheless, I managed to get through it even with my nerves. I presented. Questions were asked. I answered and 90 minutes later...I was Dr. Ashraf. It all seemed so anti-climactic. But did I need anything else?
I'm writing this here today to 1: celebrate this milestone but also to 2: reflect on the barriers I faced and some that I overcame in getting to that place. To be the first generation in my family to go to college in the USA and then to go on and get the highest degree possible? To be a woman of color and who is Muslim? I was forging a path full of wild overgrowth without a map because those around me didn't know what was to come. I had to hack my way through. Sometimes and actually most times it was hard.
I wish I could say that I have found academia to be the land of promise but I have not. Academia, like any other large system, has some deeply problematic issues. Four years from my defense? I see those more clearly than ever. I also am fighting them more loudly than ever.
If you are someone pursuing a degree, any type of degree, and are a person of color or first gen, I want you to know: you are not alone. Navigating this system is hard. I hope that you are able to find people who recognize and honor that struggle and support you.
What struggles have you faced in academia? How do you want to see the system change?
