There is something definitely magical about snows and snowfalls❄️🌨️
But have you ever ever been stuck in a snow so bad that it made you wonder how people survive such extremities, especially in a country like ours? Do share your views!
Anything in excess is not good. Even Happiness!
I've only heard and read about that time in the 90's when there were over 40 million vultures in India. So much so that people could observe them anywhere and everywhere—until one day they realised that the vultures were nowhere to be seen. Reports suggest that in just 15 years, the vulture population in India went down by 97-99%— and an anti-inflammatory drug used for cattle was the cause. This drug proved out to be lethal to them because they feed on cattle carcasses. Once consumed, they die within a few days due to acute kidney failure. The government did ban the use of Diclofenac but only in 2006. A replacement drug was quickly developed but Diclofenac continued to be available in the black market.
In a country where Jatayu, the vulture god from Ramayana is worshipped this should've been unacceptable. But only a few cared. In a decade, the world saw the biggest decline of a bird species and the vultures stood at the brink of an extinction. Yes, measures were taken to help the vulture population come back to life but these haven't proved out to be as fruitful as expected. Some drugs that are poisonous to the vultures are still in the market and haven't been banned.
It still breaks my heart when I think of what they had to go through. Probably because in the last two years, I've come to see them as my spirit animal. I was spellbound the first time a vulture decided to show up right in front of me with its wings wide open. To be able to photograph them and live in the mountains that has been a home to them is truly special. Never fails to fill my heart with love.
I hope sooner or later people start seeing them for the heroes they are and not associate them with death or look down upon them. I hope we realise their value and protect them instead of being the reason that kills them. Only a few thousands remain anyway.
They've taught me to live in silence, with patience and soar when least expected. For all this, I'm forever grateful. ❤️⛰️
