1958 BRM Type 25 2.5 litre - British Racing Motors or BRM was founded with the objective of British success in Grand Prix in the 1950’s. The first V16 car was horribly complex and the team was further hampered by poor decisions all made by committee. This changed when Alfred Owen, one of the founders, bought out the team in 1952, ultimately resulting in the Type 25. The car was designed with a principle of “simplicity”, but initially still largely in-house with only a few bought in parts from British suppliers. The car debuted in late 1955 but suffered in both reliability and handling. Mike Hawthorn and Tony Brooks were hired as drivers, but without success and the upstart Vanwall actually scored the first British GP success in 30 years in 1957. 1958 and 1959 saw further development of the car including changes to the suspension following advice from Colin Chapman. The years of development had finally turned the Type 25 into a reasonably fast and reliable racing car with victories in non-championship events and finally Jo Bonnier added the first Grand Prix win at Zandvoort in early1959. Sadly the mid-engined revolution of the time resulted in the front-engined Type 25 coming good as it became virtually obsolete. Stirling Moss described the car as the ‘best-handling and most competitive front-engined Grand Prix car that I ever had the privilege of driving’. Of the 11 cars built, all but one were converted into the rear-engined Project 48s with the exception of chassis 258 at the express request of Sir Alfred Owen to ‘ensure that you save the Dutch Grand Prix winner’. The car pictured here is chassis 258 which has become a regular and successful contender in historic racing with a refit of the original magnesium bodywork. in the paddock at 2019 Goodwood Revival where it competed in the hands of Charlie McCabe in the Richmond and Gordon Trophies race. #grrc#classicgrandprix#historicgrandprix#vintageracing#classiccars#automotivephotography#historiccar#carstagram #gwflatout#instacar#carculture#amazingcars#drivetastefully#designandstyle#exoticcars#classicdriver#driveclassics#joyofmachine#petrolhead#petrolicious#pistonheads#carvintage
