The arrival of the British altered the ecosystem of the Nilgiris in a major way. The British constructed roads and railways through lands held sacred by the Todas and other tribes in the region. While the region was endemic to many species of plants and bushes, like the Nilgiri Tahr and Nilgiri Rhododendron, the British introduced several new species of exotic plants in the region like the Australian blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), mostly in the grassland and in the shola forests that were used for grazing livestock by the Todas. This continued even after Independence, and new forest laws have disinherited the Todas of their pastoral lands. Image credit : Abbiramy @abbiramy.r
