Your kids will be influenced by individuals that DO NOT share the same values as you. Individuals w/ an agenda so big that truth doesn’t matter. Manipulated information. False information. Judgement. Poor values. Look around it’s everywhere. We see it online, on TV, in person. It doesn't matter what side of the fence you’re on, it's’ everywhere.
You may be saying to yourself, “Luke, you’re overreacting it doesn’t really matter because we know what’s right & what aligns w/ our values. We survived though this as kids, ours will too.” Think about this 20+ years ago when I was a kid it didn’t matter, we didn’t have these influences all around us. We didn’t have access to millions of outlets for “information.” We had our family, local news, & the community we lived in. Today, kids can’t get away from it. It’s literally everywhere & anyone can create or share it, whether it’s true or not.
The good news. The people barking the loudest aren’t the majority. The 2016 Presidential Election was a prime example of this, the barkers claimed Trump had no chance, what they underestimated was the huge volume of people that wanted change & kept their beliefs to themselves. For the most part, they weren’t sharing their political views on Facebook. They had a belief & showed it at the poll. That approach works out okay for us, parents. We understand our values/beliefs & have an opportunity to discern what’s manipulated info, poor values, etc, although it still has an impact on us. Our kids have no chance of this on their own. They don’t know any difference. To them it's’ always been this way & they’re immersed in it.
Our job is to not only communicate our values to our kids, but communicate w/ others. Be more vocal. Engage in dialogue w/ others of differing opinions. It doesn’t mean go attack people w/ differing opinions, it means seek to understand their position and then share yours. This is what our country was founded on and what many brave men and women have given their lives for, our freedoms. As a country we’ve got to stop tearing each other apart & end the if you’re not 100% with me you're against me montra. If we don’t speak up, our kids will follow the same path..
ANXIETY. Everyone experiences anxiety to some extent. A little anxiety about an exam may push you to study harder, and worrying about a car crash means you’ll never forget your seat belt. However, there is a point where anxiety becomes consuming and debilitating to the person affected. Too much anxiety about an exam may cause you to forget everything you studied, and worrying too much about a car crash may keep you from getting in a car. Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illness in the U.S. and they manifest in different ways.
Whether it’s worrying about someone’s perception of you, how an interview will go, or something bad happening to you or your loved ones, anxiety is often the fear of something that hasn’t happened yet. Rapid heart rate, irritability, headaches, insomnia, stomach aches, and an inability to focus are common signs and symptoms of anxiety disorders. When these symptoms become uncontrollable and interfere with your daily functioning, it is important to seek help.
Anxiety disorders are treatable, and there are consequences that can come with avoiding treatment such as impaired cognitive functioning, weakened social experiences, disrupted relationships, and a greater risk for depression and/or substance abuse. It is imperative to acknowledge when you’re feeling anxious in order to find an effective coping strategy.
Are you ready to regain control of your life and begin anxiety counseling? We’d love to help!
