Shirakawago is a world heritage site known for its 合掌 - style farmhouses. The 合掌 refers to the straw roof where it looks like two hands coming together into a prayer. These roofs are built without a single nail and are designed to shift to accommodate the weight of the snow this town receives without fail each year.
At the peak of the snow season, for exactly 6 days of the year, the town comes together to illuminate the farm houses to contrast with the snow, creating easily one of the most magical winter wonderland experience.
Yet, here I am, at the 2nd illumination event there wasn’t a single speck of snow. I’m grateful to be here in person to witness the architectural marvel of these farmhouses, but I can’t help but be disappointed for not getting the full experience. Just search shirakawago on Instagram and you’ll see what I mean.
Is this an effect of climate change? I can’t say because I don’t have extensive experience with Japan’s climate. I’ve been told this is an unusually warm winter. Say, for the sake of this discussion, yes, this is a result of climate change. This is a good reminder that we all share this earth together. The actions and policies of one country can produce tangible and intangible consequences on others. We all need to do our part in making conscious decisions that protect and improve our planet. Whether you believe in climate change or not, ultimately, doing good doesn’t hurt.

When I planned my biz trip to Japan, I had to keep one day free to visit Mt Fuji as I heard so many good reviews about it. I was so excited that I captured the peak of Mt Fuji from every single angle I can find. So grateful that the weather was perfect with no clouds blocking our view at all. One of the best view of Mt Fuji is at this lake where the mountain looks like it directly reflected on the lake but when I got there, there were too many leaves on the lake blocking the reflection. Expectation vs Reality... 😅 #mountfuji#mtfuji#wanderlust#travelgram#tokyo#japan#japantravel
