Someone hijacked my daily task chart & it looks like he’s ready for Halloween & there might be scary nails required for his costume. 🤔
Halloween is a beloved holiday for kids, but very often, health-conscious parents like me can get in the way of their fun.
So - how can we raise children who have a healthy relationship with fun foods, like candy?
🎃Work towards letting them manage their own stash. On Halloween night, let them lay out their booty, revel in their candy accomplishments and eat as much of it as they want.
🎃After Halloween, candy is saved for meal & snack times, where they get to have a couple of small pieces at meals for dessert & the occasional “as much as they want candy” at snack-time. Structure is key.
👻If this sounds scary for you, OR you find your child constantly whining, or begging for candy - they’re probably too restricted. Trust in the evidence: kids who have regular access to sweets and other “forbidden foods” eat them moderately.
This holiday, Halloween, really presents the perfect learning opportunity for the whole family. 👍🏻 #halloween

This year, I received a message from a lovely, young couple, Graham & Lindsey Baumann. Their son Easton went to heaven as an infant. Every day of Easton’s life was spent at the hospital. They never got to bring him home. Instead of going inward, they instead decided to spread his memory and every birthday, they do something special for children in his honor. This year they asked friends and family to purchase Brave Gowns so they could spread them throughout the children’s hospital where Easton was treated and they only place they got to hold their baby at night. They are truly a special family and had their own miracle this year by bringing another special baby boy into the world. They have brought me more strength and hope than they would ever know, so to open such a kind message from Graham was overwhelming. Thank you God for the good people you bring into the path of Brave Gowns story.
One my favorite movies til this day is still Pollyanna and so many quotes in it still rings true, but nothing is more true than, “Look for the good and you will find it.”

3 Granny Smith apples
1 c. jarred caramel
1 c. coconut flakes
1/2 c. semisweet chocolate chips
3 tbsp. butter
Slice apples into 1/4"-thick slices. Use a small biscuit cutter or melon-baller to remove the core from the apples. Set aside.
In a medium-sized bowl, add caramel and coconut flakes, stirring to combine. Spoon caramel-coconut mixture onto each apple slice.
In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted. Drizzle melted chocolate on apple slices and serve.
A healthy diet can have a profound effect on children’s health, helping to maintain a healthy weight, avoid certain health problems, stabilize their moods, and sharpen their minds. It can also have a profound effect on a child’s sense of mental and emotional wellbeing, helping to prevent conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and ADHD. It’s important to remember that your kids aren’t born with a craving for French fries and pizza and an aversion to broccoli and carrots. This conditioning happens over time as kids are exposed to more and more unhealthy food choices.⠀
Encourage healthy eating habits⠀
Whether they’re toddlers or in their teens, children develop a natural preference for the foods they enjoy the most. To encourage healthy eating habits, the challenge is to make nutritious choices appealing.⠀
Make mealtimes about more than just healthy food⠀
Making time to sit down as a family to eat a home-cooked meal not only sets a great example for kids about the importance of healthy food, it can bring a family together ⠀
Limit sugar and refined carbs in your child’s diet⠀
Simple or refined carbohydrates are sugars and refined grains that have been stripped of all bran, fiber, and nutrients—such as white bread, pizza dough, pasta, pastries, white flour, white rice, and many breakfast cereals. They cause dangerous spikes in blood sugar and fluctuations in mood and energy. Complex carbs, on the other hand, are usually high in nutrients and fiber and are digested slowly, providing longer-lasting energy. They include whole wheat or multigrain bread, high-fiber cereals, brown rice, beans, nuts, fruit, and non starchy vegetables. ⠀
Finally, live by example. Children copy what they see, who best to teach them than you⠀

It is our job as parents to keep our kids healthy and safe. We teach them so many things, one area where parents struggle is with healthy eating habits.
The type of relationship children have with food tends to follow them their whole life. Instilling healthy eating habits in children is a big task; you do not want your kids to develop unhealthy habits or a distorted body image.
To begin the focus should be on health rather than weight. I have been to many elementary schools and have heard 4th and 5th grade girls choosing to eat a 🥗 because they do not want to be fat, rather than choosing a salad as a healthy option.
We are role models for our children. Your attitude towards food will likely influence your child’s attitude about food. If you have a bad relationship with food your children will too. If your constantly using negative language about yourself so will your kids. If you struggle with weight loss be mindful of your what you say and do because your kids are watching. Focus in fueling your body.
Promoting healthy eating habits is kids means trusting them, allow them to make choices. Take them grocery shopping and encourage them to choose healthy options. Let them help you prepare the meal. They are more likely to try new foods if they help to pick it out and prepare it.
Stay away from labelling food as good or bad. Rather than telling a child, "sugar is bad for you" you may say something like some foods are growing foods and other foods are sometimes food. Be creative.

Did you know??? You can actually support your immune system on the daily, you can be proactive on this side of getting sick to strengthen your body so it won’t fall as easily or quickly to the winter yucks? I didn’t either 😏 We just kinda got sick, then fought to get better, over and over again.😷😩Then, Thieves and YL came into my life and taught me there could be a better way. 💥The best thing I learned and committed to was using Thieves erryday on the bottoms of my feet and the base of my spine. This Powerhouse immune booster takes seconds two times a day (this time of year) but has seriously saved me and the fam tons of sick days. 😊🎉 Why wait til we fall to fight a war when we can do take tiny steps each morning and at bedtime to try to avoid it❓
My life and that of my boys have forever been changed. They are all on there own now but guess what? They all Thieves erryday.... erryday! Because it really makes a difference‼️

Hand 🖐 Foot 🦶 Mouth 👄 Oh My! 🙀
We are seeing a lot of texts and emails about hand, foot, and mouth rashes. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common, contagious illness caused by different viruses. It typically affects infants and children under age 5, but older kids and adults can catch it as well.
From the time the child is exposed to hand, foot, and mouth disease, it takes 3 to 6 days for the first symptoms to show up. This is called the incubation period. It usually starts with a fever, sore throat or runny nose much like the common cold—but then a rash with tiny blisters may start to show up on the following body sites:
🖐In the mouth (inner cheeks, gums, sides of the tongue, top of the mouth)
🖐Palms of hands
🖐Soles of feet
🖐Note: One, few, or all of these body sites may have blisters. Symptoms are the worst in the first few days but are usually completely gone within a week. Peeling of the fingers and toes after 1 to 2 weeks can happen, but it is harmless.
🖐Is it Contagious?
You are generally most contagious during the first week of illness. But, children with hand, foot, and mouth disease may shed the virus from the respiratory tract (nose, mouth and lungs) for 1-3 weeks and in the stool for weeks to months after the infection starts.
🖐How long does it last?
The fever can be high, but often mild. Blisters on the hands and feet, and ulcers or blisters in the mouth appear 1-2 days after the first symptoms and may last for 2-7 days.
🖐What is the treatment plan?
There isn’t any medicine to treat or cure hand, foot, and mouth disease. Using acetaminophen or ibuprofen alternatively can help with the pain. Do not wake your child up to give medications, only if they are uncomfortable treat them. Call your pediatrician if your child’s fever lasts more than 3 days or if he or she is not drinking fluids.
🦶Avoid dehydration: Children with hand, foot, and mouth disease need to drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated. Call your pediatrician now or go to the ER if you suspect your child is dehydrated.

#quinoa is real damn messy when you have a 2 year old 😩 Here is a great way to enjoy quinoa without the mess. I call them quinoa pizza balls
🔹2 cups cooked quinoa (make sure it's a little overcooked so it’s nice and sticky)
🔹2 tbsp tomato paste
🔹1/2 cup grated cheese
🔹1 tbsp dry basil
🔹1 tsp garlic powder
🔹salt and pepper to taste
🔹small handful of chopped basil
✅Mix all ingredients together and form into balls. Preheat oven to 350F and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown
Let me know what you think 👇🏻

Pumpkin waffles! Make them ASAP! And if you don’t have a waffle iron make pancakes instead 🙌🏻

🔸2 large eggs
🔸1/2 cup pumpkin purée
🔸1 cup milk of choice
🔸1 tsp vanilla
🔸1 tsp pumpkin spice

I made these little bun like biscuits for #breakfast today. Super simple ingredients and #grainfree . Also a huge Bonus - the kids like them 🙌🏻 1 biscuit = 1 egg so the kiddos stay nice and full. Today I made a plain version, I spread a little butter a little jam 👌🏻 delicious.
This recipe makes one fluffy bun ☝🏻Double or triple the recipe for the whole family. You can also make these ahead of time and store in the fridge.
🔸1 tsp melted butter
🔸1 large egg
🔸1 tbsp coconut flour
🔸1/4 tsp baking powder
(Optional add ins: feta, spinach, olives, cheese or make a sweet version with dates or raisins 🤤)
Mix ingredients until coconut flour is well combined. Grease 1 small ramekin (make sure you grease it good) pour in the batter and bake in the oven until egg sets. I bake at 350f for 15 minutes
Tip: I often find that coconut flour doesn’t always blend too well so if I’m making a big batch I blend in a blender

"How do you get your kids to eat quinoa," she asked. Er, is it okay to admit I sometimes add a lot of butter and salt (after age 1) to some of my kids' foods teach them how to eat it at the start? I mean, you're not gonna judge me, right?⠀
More below, but first this is the last day to watch the free video call in my bio @kids.eat.in.color! 3 common picky eater mistakes and how to solve them using BetterBites strategies. ⠀
I don't like quinoa without some fat and flavor either. And of COURSE you can use homemade awesome sauces, avocado oil, olive oil, herbs and spices, nuts/seeds as better options than just straight up salt. I'm just being real though... I do not have room in my life for homemade sauces right now. Last week I walked to 7-11 and got some BBQ sauce with high fructose corn syrup in it for our chicken (I know, I'm gonna die). And ketchup helps a lot of kids... 🤷♀️⠀ #kidseatincolor ⠀
Can you remember the first time you had negative thoughts about your body? I think for me it was around the third grade…⠀
Believe it or not, kids as young as toddler age are starting to make comments about their own self image.⠀
In light of all the recent chatter about the newest @kurbohealth app for food tracking that targets kids, I wanted to share some helpful tips on what you can start doing NOW to help and not hurt your child’s body confidence. ⠀
I know from working with hundreds of families that struggle with these issues that knowing what to say is half the battle. It’s helpful to know what we could say and not just what we shouldn’t do. ⠀
Since the day I found out I was going to be a mama to a little girl, I knew I had to make a commitment to keep negative self talk away. ⠀
This isn’t always easy. We are becoming programed to see the flaws over the beauty. ⠀
Positive self talk is a practice, just like anything else (sports, yoga, healthy eating etc.) It takes time, but it is so so worth it for your own mental health and for your kids personal development.⠀
Body positivity isn’t just for girls either, boys too are easily influenced by negative self talk. ⠀
Today I wanted to encourage you to say a few positive things about yourself. Let your kids hear all the great things they and you can do and not what you can’t do ❤️⠀
✨If you want to read my full post on the topic, I’ll share the link in my stories. You can also find it on my blog at https://www.elementnutritionco.com/body-positivity-kids/✨
I would love to hear your thoughts below 👇🏻 ⠀

My story: supplements saved my life. Like gave me my life back on a platter with a note that said, "now you can do all the things you've dreamed of to help moms." More on that in my "food vs. medicine" highlight @kids.eat.in.color. So, I will always be in the "supplements are useful" camp. ⠀
There are lots of reasons to take supplements. I think all the reasons in this image have truth.⠀
Sometimes, supplements can do these things:⠀
* prevent disease (exs. rickets, neural tube defects) ⠀
* heal disease (exs. anemia, depression from B12 deficiency)⠀
* support health (exs. improve immunity, prevent deficiency)⠀
Supplements can also cause overdoses, illnesses, and waste money or do nothing. They CAN be harmful. Different forms of supplements can hurt some people and help others.⠀
The best way to take supplements is under the supervision of a provider. I take mine under the supervision of a functional dietitian who has seen my blood work. M&m take theirs under me. Paul takes his under his medical doctor (and me 😉).⠀
M&m take Vitamin D, Fish oil (because we don't eat the recommended amount of fish), and an L. Rhamnosus probiotic (because they are group care settings and there's been some helpful research in preventing some daycare-related illnesses with L. Rhamnosus probiotics.) They also get elderberry when coming down with something (more in my elderberry highlight @kids.eat.in.color).⠀
I don't make blanket supplement recommendations - because I don't know you or your child's body. ⠀
I know you'll ask for brand recommendations - those are in my amazon store. This is NOT meant to be a commercial for vitamins though (and keep in mind @kids.eat.in.color does get a small commission on anything purchased from my amazon store). ⠀
More than just running out to get supplements, I hope that you'll think about the why behind the supplements. Have you talked to a provider? Are you asking for bloodwork? Are you resolving a deficiency? ⠀
What do you think? Have supplements helped you?⠀ #kidseatincolor ⠀
