There's a ton of space junk out there — actually, about 6,300 tons. But better that it's out in space than here on Earth, right? Well, that depends. If you're an astronaut, you'd probably prefer it planet-side.
At orbital velocity, a speck the size of a pencil eraser can punch a hole 5 inches deep in a chunk of aluminum, and picture above proves it!
Don't worry: this smash-up happened entirely on Earth as a demonstration of the types of dangers that are up in the exosphere.
The offending speck that caused this damage was tiny — it only weighed about a half-ounce (14 grams). In other words, it was about the size and mass of a pencil eraser. That crater? It's a full five inches (13 centimeters) deep.
To keep from falling to the ground, items in orbit have to be traveling something like 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour). That's how such a tiny piece of trash can wreak so much havoc.
To further illustrate this damage potential, consider that an aluminum sphere 1.3 mm in diameter can inflict damage similar to a .22-caliber long rifle bullet, the energy of an aluminum sphere 1 cm in diameter hits a target like a 400-lb safe traveling at 60 mph, and a fragment just 10cm long impacts like 25 sticks of dynamite!
The big pieces of junk can be tracked, and orbiting satellites can be moved to higher or lower orbits to avoid them. But the small pieces, like paint chips and other tiny stuff, are a lot harder to track. We've just got to make a best guess for them and plan accordingly — at least, until they send somebody up there to clean up the junk.

This is the giant Saturn V, the strongest rocket ever built and the only rocket which brought humans to moon. Actually, there were also plans for a bigger and stronger rocket too, the NOVA rocket. The rocket was created to bring humans to mars in the post-Apollo era but no NOVA rocket was built and NASA cancelled the rocket and they began to focus on the Space Shuttle.
Flight VA251 is a confirmed success! Ariane 5 successfully deployed its two satellite passengers – EUTELSAT KONNECT for @eutelsat_official and @isro.in’s GSAT-30 – to geostationary transfer orbit. Congratulations to all the teams involved!
I've really been wanting to work on a larger canvas so last night I dug one out and got a head start on this piece. The other thing I wanted to experiment with was doing a drawing/painting entirely in Paint Markers as opposed to paints with traditional brushes. So this is a mix of black, white, and grey paint markers blended together. I had so much fun working on this and felt even more comfortable working bigger and with the types of tools I am more familiar with. I already enjoy doing black and white drawings but this is a really cool exploration and I'm curious where it will take me.
