Strolling through Barcelona in the 1960s, Miguel Milá found an abandoned opal globe in front of a glass factory and so he decided to pick it up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This opal globe went on to become the inspiration behind his iconic lighting design collection 'Cesta'. Cesta directly translates to basket - used to hold the fragile piece.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ever since I started writing this streetlight book, I’ve received dozens of lamp photos from people all over the country (and sometimes, the world 🌎)! Getting them always warms my heart, as they suggest that I’m not the only one with an appreciation for this ubiquitous yet understudied form of civic tackle, and that maybe––just maybe?!––my enthusiasm for streetlights has had something to do with it. It’s not so often, however, that two separate sources, on two consecutive days, totally unbeknownst to one another, send photos of *the same exact lamp*. Behold! Central Park. Before and after today’s snowstorm 🌨❄️ Thank you @mikemanville and @speedyp ! And keep the photos coming, friends💡🤗
Lighting up the boulevards demanded a show: a soaring tower, a cluster of globes, an Olympic-style torch bedecked in calligraphic Moorish patterns. But lighting up the archetypal Southern California dreamscape of single 🏡 family bungalows, nestled in the winding foothills? That required a different kind of streetlight design … and no one did it better than Marbelite. Founded in 1912, Marbelite Corp was a homegrown Los Angeles company that specialized in spun cast concrete streetlights. Scrolling through images in the corporate catalogue, it’s hard not to compare these fluted concrete columns to Greco-Roman pillars, which, along with the palms and the tile and the cloudless skies, conjured a modern Mediterranean 🌴🌞⛱ No wonder you can *still* find OG Marbelites streetlights all over town ... as well as thousands upon thousands of replicas. 📷: Marbelite Corporate Catalogue (thanks for helping me get my hands on this, Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting and the inimitable Jeff Ziliotto!!), and the last one by yours truly✌️

👩🏻🎨 In my opinion, Painting is just like practice martial art🧘🏻♀️🤸🏻♀️📿, or plant a tree🌱👩🏻🌾🏝, you have to observing👂👃👁, absorbing🌪🕳, practicing💪 👻🎮, irrigating🌬🌧🌊, estabilishing💓🌸🍒, growing🐋🐉.. You need be patient, to know this is a process and life experience you’ve chosen. Every artist has their own vision and we all walking on our own path.
For me, every year I have my practice plan, like what direction I’m going to focus this year, and how? What strengths I’m going to empower this year in order to help me active towards to my vision?
In this coming year, core practicing, which my essential foundational practicing will still going on another new round. I found this always the most important thing to me, the easiest the hardest. I’m going to focus on one big topic each month, to gain sensitivity of observation and my line and form quality.
I’d like share this experience with you. If you like to join my rhythm, Be prepared!
