CONSIDERING SELLING these filters. Any interest out there?
They’re very vintage mastering/cutting lathe filters, totally passive with no insertion loss at line level. Sound is incredible, I’ve been using them on mix bus for a low cut that actually ends up adding weight to the mix over the cutting frequency. High cuts add a big presence boost under the cut frequency and occasionally are the extract thing a mix needs to get that sparkle! I added xlr pigtails instead of using front panel connectors to easily use these in a modern studio. Original huuuge knobs, tons of vibe!
Considering selling these to fund a more traditional mix bus eq. Not sure on a price, send me an offer!
This is an interesting (and not crazily expensive) discovery. The @otomachines BAM reverb ! It is not trying to be an emulation of a plate or a real space but rather a recreation of the first digital reverb outboards. Those reverb had generally low bits depth (neeeerd) with strong LPF (around 10khz). This one even added an input transformer transient simulator (???). Which makes it sounds very grainy and interesting. All those little quirkinesses make the reverb very easy to insert in a mix, it blends very well and adds a nice sense of space without being over-bearing ! And the unit iself is so small and convenient ! I saw they also sell a delay or (more intriguing) a saturator/compressor ("warming unit"). I am very curious about this one. Anyone already used it ? #wheeliemix#otomachines#reverb#studiogear#mixingengineer#mixing#recordingstudio#musicproducer#analoggear#gearporn#outboardgear

🧠Shakespeare once said "To mix in mono or not, that is the question"
🤔What is the difference between stereo and mono?
The difference is in the number of channels (signals) used. Mono uses one, stereo uses more than one. In monaural sound one single channel is used. It can be reproduced through several speakers, but all speakers are still reproducing the same copy of the signal.
🤔How do I reference my track / song / mix in mono?
Put your DAW's "utility" plugin on the master channel. This will either have a "mono" button which you can just turn on and off to reference. Or, bring the "width" knob down to 0%. This will then allow you to hear your track in mono.
⚠️Keep in mind, you want your song to sound great in BOTH stereo, and mono.
Majority of devices that we listen to music on, are stereo. Let's also be honest...wide, spacious mixes sound AMAZING! Sounds moving from ear to ear, nice reverbs creating space, etc.
This doesn't mean we can completely
forget about the mono mix though...
There are still mono club systems, as well as other devices (some blue-tooth speakers, etc) people listen on. You want to make sure that your song still translates well on those too.
The general rule of thumb is that your MAIN ELEMENTS should still show up well in the mono mix. If you find your main sounds are being "canceled" in the mono mix, you need to address this.
Layering is a great approach to having both a strong center (mid/mono mix) and a wide (stereo) mix.
For example...you can have one main lead layer a little more "center focused" (doesn't necessarily have to be dead mono) and then you can layer it with extremely wide layers to push the width. When summing to mono, the main sound still shows up, and the little ear candy layers...well its okay if they aren't as present. Their job was to stretch the width!
Hope this helps you in your next mixdown!

The old vs. the new! 😅😉
There have been a ton of companies trying to remake some of the true classics, anything from microphones to outboard gear and synths.
What's your opinion about this development? It does make a lot of gear available to people with less money to spare but builds on the research and development from other companies. Really interested to hear your thoughts about it! (I know this photo isn't the best example because it's still Yamaha, but it raises an interesting point) 😅
