In 1973, a US Navy aircraft on a cargo delivery mission was caught in violent weather over the south of Iceland. The temperature plunged and the aircraft experienced severe icing. Captain James Wicke fought to keep the aircraft in the air but in the end was forced to crash land along Sólheimasandur’s black sand beach. All 7 crew members survived and were rescued, however, the aircraft was written off and has been left on the beach ever since.
In Jan 2020, whilst walking along the straight flat road that leads to the aircraft, Joe and I witnessed the police recovering the bodies of two tourists. Iceland was experiencing extreme weather that week, and the young couple had apparently succumbed to the weather. The couple were found 150M apart, just 20 mins walk from the parking lot.
This incident really stuck with me, not just because of how tragic the couple’s death was, but also because being met with the same violent weather at the same location, how different the outcomes were for the two groups of people. And it made me think this: How often do we overestimate our seemingly impossible circumstances? If our maker says it’s not our time to go, then even falling out of the sky will not kill you. At the same time, how often do we overestimate our abilities in any given situation? Even with both feet planted on the ground, just one misjudgement can get us killed on a straight flat road.

At the Moment i am on the road at a new Photography Adventure. The Day couldn't have started better.
I enjoyed the Sunrise on a Mountain Peak with perfect Light Conditions 😁, and now i try some Wildlife Captures in the National Park Seewinkel in Burgenland Austria 😎. Have you ever been to National Park Seewinkel? *
Little white house 🏡.
I guess the sunrise when you wake up here ain't too shabby? One day I'll probably live somewhere like this. Hands up who here would do the same? If so where is that place for you?
