Putting into words why Kobe Bryant mattered is a nearly-impossible task. One worries the attempt will run the risk of coming up short. Moreover, his significance took on different forms for different fans. That being said, from our perspective, Kobe will go down in the history books not only for the number of points he recorded on the basketball court, but also for the role he played in pushing our country forward. Many people forget the fact that one of America's biggest exports is culture: movies, TV programs, music, books, fashion, and, of course, sports. What's more is that sports, in and of themselves, have the ability to impact every other item on the list. Modern-day American giants like Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Floyd Mayweather, Serena Williams, and Kobe Bryant project our way of life and the principles we cherish through their sports onto the rest of the world. These athletes become the vectors for our values on a global scale. In the political arena, this is sometimes referred to as soft-power or "the ability to shape the preferences of others through appeal and attraction." It's something that's hard to put into words but can be partially viewed through actions and beliefs. The belief that your starting point in life should not dictate your final resting status. The belief that tomorrow can - and will be - better than today if you're able to wake up and compete. The belief that no one wants hand-outs, and that if you truly want to leave your mark, personal responsibility mixed with blood, sweat, and tears can help you leave behind a legacy. Kobe is the embodiment of the American Dream that too many commentators cast a negative light on nowadays. His life is a reminder that our country and our culture is still strong and enviable throughout the rest of the world, as evidenced by front pages from London to Los Angeles, from Mexico City to Manilla. That being said, these values can vanish with complacency and Kobe's ability to never cheat a day should resonate with all of us while we aim to be the best versions of our own selves. Kobe's legacy will be forever enshrined in the rafters of American history. He will be sorely missed.
