There are 10 native species of Kingfishers down under, kookaburra being the largest one.
The 1st photo is that of the Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctusis) - a medium-sized kingfisher [Length: ~20 cm Wingspan: ~30 cm]. These are common birds found throughout the coastal regions of mainland Australia, albeit less common in Tasmania.
These shots were taken at the ‘Mother of Ducks Lagoon’ - a nature reserve at Guyra, NSW (2nd photo). This reserve is a rare breeding ground for several freshwater waterbirds – and the wetland itself is unique with a deep layer of peat underneath.

🎨 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : Heather Matthew
Heather is a paper artist and creative mentor
"When making my most recent work about climate change I created paper from cotton workmen’s shirts and bed sheets donated to the families who were affected by floods in north Queensland. To this paper pulp I added soot and burnt leaf inclusions which were washed onto the beach after the rolling succession of Australian bushfires. These materials carry the energy of places affected by climate change. They are entangled into sections of the washed-up fishing net which has been mended and re-mended. It is a metaphor for our planetary interconnectedness and speaks of the hopeful efforts to address and mend this climatic emergency."

We live on the doorstep of Yengo National Park. It is the second most significant Aboriginal site in Australia and was severely effect by the bush fires early this year. However today I could’t help but take this photo of it’s magnificent transformation after the rain. One moment the ground is charged black and the next it is iridescent green. It still has a long road to full recovery but this is an optimistic start.

A glittering tasting of wines from South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania at the Australia-India Business Exchange in New Delhi. The tasting conducted by Sommelier @singh.magandeep also saw Neil Hadley MW give interesting insights into the terroir of Australia and its winemaking philosophy. Crisp Semillon and Riesling, bountiful oaked Chardonnay and opulent Shiraz and GSM blends were some of the wines that engaged trade, media and connoisseurs alike. A great initiative by Austrade to promote Australian wines in India.
We have some sad news to share – there won’t be a Regional Tourism Awards program in 2020.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to secure a Major Partner for this year’s program and without adequate funding, our board have decided delivering a high-quality awards program is not feasible.
Since our beginning in 2004, we’ve seen firsthand what a difference the awards have made to many regional tourism businesses and events across the state, from providing an opportunity to benchmark their operations with similar businesses to helping operators identify their own personal and professional development, and providing a stepping stone to success at state and national levels.
We are committed to supporting the development of regional tourism across NSW through industry development and business growth programs and events and hope to return in future years.
In the meantime, we strongly urge you to consider entering directly at a state level this year and take advantage of the immensely valuable entrant support program to help you along the way.
You can find out more about the NSW Tourism Awards on their website or follow along on their Facebook page for updates on the 2020 program.
