Our ocean ecosystems are under increasing pressure from the twin threats of climate change and ocean acidification. Excess carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is causing our oceans to become warmer and more acidic, resulting in mass global coral bleaching events and making it harder for corals and shelled organisms to grow and reproduce.
By making small changes to your lifestyle, such as taking fewer flights, eating less meat, lowering your thermostat, and driving less, you can make a big difference in the amount of carbon you release into the atmosphere.
Every little action contributes to larger change. It may just be a drop in the ocean, but without those drops there would be no ocean.
But the most important thing the ocean gives me is space. Space to dream, space to think, space to breathe. It allows me to slip into the deliciousness nothingness where possibilities and dreams surface and are given room to breathe. I stare out at the ocean and let the expanse of water give me permission to let my heart, brain and soul expand too.
Water purifiers and cleanses just by washing over anything, clearing away the silt and calcified residue, by virtue of simply being itself, by moving freely and continuously. Love is like that too.

Surfing is an intense sport. There are moments of fear that come with the uncertainty and power the ocean brings us. You may have moments where you feel out of breath, wipeouts that push your body into shapes you didn’t know you could make, and paddle-outs that feel exhausting. And of course, theres the intense high of catching a wave.
But in-between these moments of intensity are periods of stillness. It is the time in-between sets when you’re waiting for your next wave. Where does your mind go during these moments? Are you anxious? Impatient? Is your mind pulling you back to matters on land? Or maybe it feels like all you’ve been doing is waiting. You’ve had an off day and can’t seem to get up.
After you’ve put in the hard work of paddling out, you have been gifted with this moment from the ocean herself. Floating on your own island away from the rest of life’s concerns, its just you and the water connected to a deep rhythm and flow as old as time. You have nothing left to do but wait. Feel the water on your skin, the sun on your face, and the experience of being where you are in this moment. You are no where else but here. And it’s exactly where you need to be.
"For her the ocean was more than a dream, it was a place she needed to visit to find herself. And when she returned to the city, you could see the sun in her eyes, the wind in her hair, and taste in the infinite salt on her lips." — Jose Chaves
