Gratitude...This has been my key word since I moved here. I take a few moments when I first wake up and then again just before I fall asleep. I stop myself many times each day and allow myself time to deeply feel how grateful I am for all that my life is. Dont get me wrong, I am still as human as the rest of you. I get tired, grumpy, and sometimes take things for granted. But I feel this is a practice. Each day it becomes easier and more of a habit. Each day I see more and more to be grateful for.
This afternoon I spent time with a friend. We enjoyed a cup of tea as the sun shone through the window. It made me feel so much gratitude, not only her, but to others who show kindness. I am grateful for sunshine. Cups of tea with friends. Beauty in the world around us. Soft rolling ocean waves. And life. ... Gratitude.
Would you share with me one thing you are grateful for today? #starfishessentials#gratitude#gratefulheart#teawithfriends#oceanwaves#lifeisagift#familyandfriends#mindfulliving#sharing#caring#kindness
Wedding days are a mix of many emotions. I didn’t realize 8 years ago when I first photographed my first wedding with @katieleephoto in Indiana that most the day I would be managing other peoples emotions. It’s honestly my favorite part of the job. I show up looking to be the source of peace during chaos (let me rephrase that- GOOD/ joyful / beautiful chaos). Something NO ONE told me but I’ve learned over the years of photographing 230+ weddings is: you get to bring either more chaos OR peace/calm/light to a day. Please Photo friends - remember to eat a good breakfast before you shoot a wedding, bring water, and realize what will get photographed will. Mange your emotions so you can help to mange other peoples emotions.
Future Brides- look for someone you trust to bring you peace not add to the chaos. Look for a personality that jives with yours and fiancé’s. You are with the photographer MORE than anyone else the entire day. From getting ready, through portraits, ceremony, and touching base with them all reception…it matters who you spend your time with. I hope you don’t pick someone just because you like their trendy photos but don’t know the type of wedding day experience they will offer. I will say it till I’m blue in the face- people will remember HOW you make them feel, not just the final product.
Photographers- Please eat a good breakfast, drink water, and see how important emotional intelligence is during a wedding day when you are dealing with family drama, the bride freaking out, and groomsmen hitting on you all day. The ability to fluidly move between making the family feel comfortable with you enough to get their attention for photos without coming across bitchy to reading your Bride + Groom’s physical and emotional state by not dragging them ALL over the place for photos if they just want celebrate with their friends, can be a hard space to navigate. But I BELIEVE in all of you. Let’s create beautiful imagery but also give an incredible human experience at the same time.
P.S. while you are reading: There is always enough work to go around. Believe this to your core and your life will flourish in more ways than just business.
