London Calling ! Debutant 1944 by Francis Marshall (1901-1980) pen and ink inscribed to the Queen’s Dressmaker Ian Thomas. Page 41 in London West 1944 by Francis Marshall. “ the Debutant with her three ostrich feathers and her train and veil , is part of the tradition of the London season. ...until fairly recently there was a long and nerve wracking wait in the Mall to be endured before going to the Palace. The line of cars with their cargoes of uniforms , ostrich feathers , jewellery, organdie.and satin, waited in a long line stretching from the Victoria Memorial to the Horse Guards Parade. They were thus at the mercy of the crowds of sightseers who came to admire them and who crowded around each car in turn , peering in the windows so that the unfortunate debutants felt rather like fishes in an aquarium. “ - You can walk to the Mall Galleries to see this charming drawing @connectartfair opening this week. Beautiful, vintage ostrich feather fan in lovely shade of pink - light coral . The spines of the fan that the feathers are attached to have the look of tortoise shell but are possibly plastic. Fan is approx 14"x 9" when open. It's in good condition for a fragile item, but should not be used, bits of feathers will fly off if waved too hard. The spines and hanging loop are in good shape, not dried/ cracked. This is a special little display piece for your dressing area, dressing table, boudoir, vanity girls room. Flapper 1920's era look, but age is unknown. Definitely vintage.

Thank you for the votes on our Lotus story yesterday. It was a really close call and even though the long feather won by a tiny amount, we have decided to go with the neater ostrich feather in the lotus! Hand sewn in the studio today. 🕊
Bring back my gowns! ♥️ Ru floated down the runway this week in a red ostrich feather fantasy and in the words of @stacylmatthews I thought it was couture! 🧐 I believe the outfit was made by @zaldynyc who has been whipping up masterpieces for Ru’s wardrobe for some time now 👑 initially the look reminded me of the delicate couture fantasies @pppiccioli has been turning out for @maisonvalentino lately, but on further rummaging it also resembles this 1965 @balenciaga dress by Cristóbal Balenciaga himself 👗 Cristóbal established his couture house in Paris in 1937 and quickly became recognised as the master of couture with a major influence on 20th century fashion. His clothes were celebrated particularly for the craftsmanship, with each feather of this dress hand dyed and individually glued to the sheer fabric leaving the lightweight, flexible shafts to move and sway with the dress 💞 On closer inspection Ru’s look seems to be a jumpsuit covered in feathers - with an additional cape of feathers behind that gives the illusion of a full dress. It’s interesting because when some of Cristobal’s feather dresses were examined before being displayed in museums, some of them had silk jumpsuits underneath rather than a simple slip dress. It seems that in both cases this may have been to promote the comfort of the wearer 🌸💫🕊 either way I always love seeing Ru’s wardrobe take a new direction! ❣️ #rupaul#rupaulsdragrace#rupaulsdragraceuk#zaldy#zaldynyc#valentino#pierpaolopiccioli#cristobalbalenciaga#balenciaga#ostrichfeathers#ostrichfeather#couturedress#couturegowns#couturedressmaking
