👉SCM is short for sternocleidomastoid, and it attaches from the skull to the collarbone and sternum. This means that if the SCM is not happy you can feel pain and discomfort in the head and collarbone/sternum area.

Here's how to perform the SCM Release!
👉Find the SCM by turning the head. Usually, the SCM will stick out, and you can feel it from the back of the ear to the collarbone and sternum.
☝️Your thumb and pointer finger will be used to hold the SCM. The shape of those fingers will be similar to holding a credit card.
1️⃣Turn the head and place the fingers on each side of the SCM.
2️⃣"Pinch" the SCM slightly and then turn the head facing forward.
3️⃣You can now adjust the pressure.
4️⃣Hold for 30-60 seconds and repeat on different parts of the SCM.

HIP PAIN? TRY THIS 👇🏼
Here are 3 drills that can help work your hip mobility and possibly relieve tightness or pain! Always consult a physician if you have a serious injury or reoccurring pain. Try these out 👇🏼
💥 Wall Frog Pose
- Place your feet against a wall and externally rotated (toes facing out)
- Have your knees wider than shoulder width
- Slowly shift your hips back as far as you can for 3 seconds then shift forward
- Continue to shift back and work for more range of motion
- Repeat for 10-12 reps
💥 Wall Lateral Leg Raise
- Get on your hands and knees with one side against a wall
- Place your outside leg out straight to the side
- Raise it up slowly for 3 seconds then lower it
- Repeat for 10-12 reps each side
💥 Wall Fire Hydrants
- Get on your hands and knees with one side against a wall
- With your outside leg, make a complete circle forward with your knee
- Repeat for 5 circles forward then 5 circles backwards on each side

Thank you all so much for your love on yesterday’s post, it’s so appreciated and I’m so glad to be part of such honest conversation about living with pain and our treatment regimes! 🥰
As promised, some practical Infusion tips from my experience are:
✨ Don’t eat for six hours beforehand and sip water only. Infusions can cause nausea so it’s much easier if you have an empty tummy! Take snacks with you as you should be able to eat and drink about an hour in as long as you’re feeling okay 🥳
✨ Wear loose, thin, comfy clothes. You’ll likely end up with monitors for observations all over the place and no one wants to end up in a hospital gown because their clothes aren’t accessible!
✨ In cold weather your veins are more difficult to find. Staying nice and cosy helps the nurses put your cannula in first time and in a place that’s comfortable for you (not just wherever they can find a vein)
✨Take stuff to keep you occupied (magazines, Netflix etc.) but also anything you might need to get comfy (I always take a hot water bottle) because there’s a good chance you’ll end up asleep 😴
✨ Always arrange for someone to escort you home - preferably someone who isn’t freaked out in hospitals / by needles and blood! Have I ever told you all the story about Mark seeing my cannula being removed?!? 😂
✨ Infusions lower blood pressure for a little while. If you naturally have low blood pressure let the nurses know so they can tweak the infusion duration to suit your body
✨ If there’s a chance you could be pregnant let the nurses know just in case this may cause any problems / you need special observations. I always do a pregnancy test while I’m there to be sure.
✨ Don’t wear jewellery / take valuables with you. You can’t guarantee you’ll be with them all the time so better so be safe and leave them at home!

A little background: this lovely little dog had experienced a trauma and found himself with multiple pelvic fractures. After being systemically stabilised in the ICU, our surgical and anaesthesia team fixed him right up!
Prior to surgery he was on a fentanyl constant rate infusion, which kept him super comfortable (and his tail still wagging😍). After his surgery we managed his pain relief purely with this epidural catheter and paracetamol🧐
Now! This is why it's important to always #painscore your patients!
Part of our duty as vet nurses is to ensure our patients are comfortable, so, when we think out patient is painful we must report this to our vets. Our vets can then assess the patient and if need be, change the analgesia (pain relief medication) plan.
❌Important: Even if we think our patient is in pain, we must only give medication if and when it is prescribed by a vet❌
There are several types of systemic analgesia available, but they can have side effects, including:
This is where an epidural catheter can help!
This is a thin tube which is inserted into the epidural space, and stays in situ following the surgical procedure to administer post op pain relief👌
💉In our patient above, we gave bupivicaine 0.5% every 6 hours slowly into the epidural catheter.
🐶During administration, it is important to let gravity help distribute the solution, so we propped him up comfortably in his natural sitting position to achieve this.
👆Always pain score to assess all analgesia administration effect.
👏This boys pain score using the epidural catheter was 0:
🐶Sleeping, settled, comfortable in kennel.
🐶Does not react to light palpation of painful area or when being moved or turned.
🐶Relaxed body language, no inappropriate vocalising.
🐶Bright on interaction.
Side effects to monitor for:
❌Inadequate pain relief
