Hello! I have set up this account to document life on our little farm.
As the doormat says, "Welcome" 😊
Technically we are hobby farmers but that seems a bit misleading as it's a lot of hard work and graft to keep all the animals happy!! We are however rewarded with some amazing moments of cuteness / births / frolics / stunning scenery and lots more and that's what I intend to share here 📷🐶🐈🐴🐮🐏🌸. Along with a little bit of cottage renovating and interiors probably as I am mid way through such a project 🏡🔨🎨 #FarmLife#Sheep#Lambs#Countryside#BabyAnimals#RuralLiving#SustainableFarming#EnglishCountryside
Meanwhile back at the landfill...
The architecture of our landfill reminds me Dante’s circles of hell. About every 3 months we spiral up and down to a “new” dumping area formally known as the old dumping area after it’s been compacted and covered with dirt. I didn’t have much garbage today: 1 bag household, 1 recyclable, and 1 wooden outdoor storage thing that had split open and was beyond repair. .
Hurst Lodge is Grade II* listed and understood to date back to1580. The house was built by John Barker, who at the time was a gentleman usher to Queen Elizabeth I. The house was passed to Lady Cardross who was the late 4th Countess of Buchan and then in turn to the Palmer family in the 1740s. Arranged over three floors, the accommodation is classically proportioned of its time and the main reception rooms all benefit from lovely high ceilings and a wonderful southerly aspect over the gardens and grounds beyond.
The property abounds with period features and elegance, including Delft tiling, 17th Century oak panelling and original fireplaces. Over recent years the property has undergone considerable modernisation.
The main house is entered through the grand reception hall, with an open fire, wood block parquet herringbone pattern floor and 17th Century panelling. An inner hall gives access to the main reception rooms, individually styled, the dining room has panelling and a chequer board pattern floor and the drawing room has a spectacular vaulted ceiling with a large feature window. The kitchen has modern appliances. The bedroom accommodation is spread over two floors and combines generously proportioned rooms, many with en suite bathrooms, and an impressive master suite.
There is good secondary accommodation with a four bedroom Gardener’s Cottage and the old Coach House which is in need of restoration and was formally arranged as two 1 and 3 bedroom self-contained flats.
//SORTING STICK + SHAPES//
Bring the cow sorting stick inside! Ours needed a thorough cleaning first...😏 I taped down various shapes & called them out for Jack to point to. Normally, he wouldn’t participate in something like this. 🙅🏼♂️ Add a cow sorting stick & the game is changed! 😂 I’ll be doing this with numbers, letters, and, eventually, sight word practice! 👍🏼

One of the reasons I have chickens is to keep me grounded - to remind me of what's truly important in life.
This week has been one of the worst I've experienced of keeping chickens. As I have had 3 hens killed by a raccoon and another I don't expect to survive from other causes. It's been a little scary.
I love how in darkness there is beauty.
The beauty this week has been the sense of accomplishment in learning myself how to set a trap. With a flashlight.
It has been the offer and reassurance for help from my neighbors.
It has been the sigh of relief last night after counting every chicken safely in the coop.
In has been in the middle of cleaning up a gruesome mess - in the dark, cold rain - the gentle reminder that we are going to a City. Where the roses never fade.
Returned to the market and sold within 24 hours!🏘❤️

UPS man: I workout, but I’ve never used kettlebells. Do you like them?
Me: Yes! And now you can say you HAVE worked out with kettlebells!
Props to our UPS man for helping bring healthy opportunities to our community!
Have you tried kettlebells? Yes or no?
Timing is everything! When you believe, those so called coincidences, that right place at the right time, that luck, just seems to find it’s way to you. Because you are aligned with that mentally.
Every morning and night I go out my front door and sit, I see something different and magical everyday, why? Because I believe that something magical is always about to happen! #rainbow#doublerainbow#magical#timing#believe#ruralliving#myhome

After the dog got to the first trap this one is working (it’s high enough he can’t reach)
It’s cheap tin cat food in some water. It was an old plastic bottle I used a soldering iron to put holes in it. I worked out 7-10mm seems to work best. It also took 3/4 days to really start smelling and working. I plan on putting these all around our yard to try and combat the fly problem. This was an old vinegar bottle but soft drink and milk bottles would also work well. .
These 3 beautiful girls have grown sooooo much in the 7 months since I’ve seen them! Today was the best day yet in the orchards at nearly 80°! One more full day tomorrow and then I’ve added a last minute slot on Saturday and we are done for the year 🤍🌸

Winter has apparently decided that it would unload ALL THE SNOW in just one week. I guess we're making up for lost time.

I promised myself that we'd spend more time outside as a family. Yesterday we went ice fishing for the first time and it was a lot of fun. (Even if we didn't have fresh fish to eat, it was a gorgeous day on the lake with my boys and some new friends. )
