Throw back to when I was Sen (Chihiro) from Ghibli’s Spirited Away for 10 minutes.
For just ¥500 you get to experience this super unique ride called “Taraibune” and try to image yourself as the brave 10-year-old trying to save your dragon-boy lover. 🙈 Only in Sado island, Niigata! Can’t wait to be back again month end.

. #AmazingAugust The sea-fireflies off the coast Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture are like a scene taken straight from a fairytale.

Today I came to Sado island ( #佐渡島 ), probably Japan’s largest isolated island, connected only by a 2-hour ferry ride to Niigata city.⛴
Sado is most well known for its ancient gold mine and world-famous taiko group Kodo ( #鼓童 ), but today I want to bring you to this charming little fishing village called Shukunegi ( #宿根木 ).
It’s characterized by really narrow alleys and really, really authentic old houses.
This is the most famous photo spot - called the Sankakuya - “The Triangle House”. It looks like a distorted shot taken with panorama mode on iPhone or crazy wide angle lens but it totally looks like this in real life!
A real gem to explore in Sado. ♡
This kind of view 💙 I'm coming back slowly here after two weeks of work at Visa pour l'image. Always a pleasure to meet much great people and photographers who show the true about what is happening in this world.
Here’s another Ghibli reference in Sado island - have you watched Laputa: Castle in the Sky?
This is the remains of Sado Gold Mine - the largest gold and silver mine in Japan since 400 years ago, which many said bear the resemblance of Laputa with its structure entwined in lush green, looking like a floating castle.
Do drop by the Sohdayu Mine ( #宗太夫坑 ) - an actual mine filled with robotic mannequins to illustrate the actual mining done during the Edo period ⛏💰🕳- really really interesting, I enjoyed it a lot.
There are lots more to explore in Sado island! I’ll be back next week again to uncover more hidden gems (or maybe gold? Haha).
