Tokai - Pollsmoor maximum security prison has been pinpointed as the most overcrowded prison in the Western Cape. Medium B, which houses males, is more than 200% overcrowded. Pollsmoor continues to hold some of South Africa's most dangerous criminals. Although the prison was designed with a maximum capacity of 4,336 offenders attended by a staff of 1,278, the current inmate population is over 7,000. This figure fluctuates daily. Records show that the majority of inmates come from Mitchell's Plain, but the facility has housed some prominent political prisoners in the past. Former President Nelson Mandela was transferred to Pollsmoor from Robben Island before being sent to Victor Verster Prison prior to his release. Walter Sisuslu and Ahmed Kathrada , both anti-apartheid activists, were also incarcerated at Pollsmoor. Alan Boesak also served his prison term here after he was convicted of fraud. The Prison is known for its overcrowded and dangerous conditions and has no sports facilities for inmates. "Life stands still in prison. In prison you listen to instruction. It is hell on earth" ~ Chris Malgas, prison warder.

"Quand je pense à ces gens qui flattent le tyran pour exploiter sa tyrannie et la servitude du peuple, je suis presque aussi souvent ébahi de leur méchanceté qu'apitoyé de leur sottise."
