“When I transferred to Western Michigan University in 2014, I came with the intention of living my purpose and creating a name for myself as a social justice storyteller and filmmaker. In order to get there, I knew I needed a mentor to help guide me along my journey. That’s when I came across Dr. Machiorlatti, a Western Michigan Associate Professor of Communication and the Director of Undergraduate Studies. I knew I wanted her to be my mentor. Alongside Dr. Mac, with the help of WMU, I learned strategies to leverage narratives, how to use storytelling to promote civic engagement and even more about social justice media that shapes policy and culture.
From then on, the influence this mentor had on me and my work is what has molded me into the multidisciplinary storyteller and social justice entrepreneur that I am today. It was at the University where I created my first documentary-short, and won an honorable mention at the 2016 Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Festival of Media Arts, WMU’s first BEA win in program history. Because of my opportunities at WMU and Dr. Mac, I had the honor of meeting Michael Moore, the Academy-Award winning filmmaker, I’ve been able to be a production assistant for several major networks, including HGTV, TLC, ESPN3 and Rogan Productions – and all during my time as an undergraduate student at WMU.
I will forever be thankful for the willpower and entrepreneurial mindset Western gave to me—I did not need to wait to be hired to tell great stories, I did not need to wait to be given a seat at the table, I am allowed and capable of building my own table. I am allowed to build and open my own doors. I can create my own opportunities.
My time at Western Michigan University has shaped me into my best self, a person who isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of creative potential. Thank you for being my muse and inspiring me to use storytelling and filmmaking as a means for social change.
As I think about the next steps of my journey, I know that in everything I do, I want to be an inspiration to other young artists who are passionate about media, storytelling and making an impact through their art.”

Ciao a tutti! ♥️
Happy #squirrelapreciationday 🐿 Today we recognize the role that squirrels play in the environment. Have any cool stories about a UT campus squirrel?

Friends and followers of SFCC! Today we are launching a call out for participants for our research project on sexual violence and harassment committed by professors in post secondary institutions.
In the past two years, there has been a resounding cry led by students on Canadian campuses to improve postsecondary policies and practices around campus sexual violence. As campuses begin to acknowledge the existence of rape culture in their communities, post-secondary administrators have highlighted orientation week/frosh, fraternities and sororities, and excessive drinking as areas of concern. In both academic and non-academic settings, a large volume of research has focused on sexual violence that follows a student-on-student pattern. In contrast, little attention and few resources have been invested in exploring how other power structures within academia contribute to rape culture on campuses. In the context of the #MeToo movement, public conversations around sexual violence have shifted more attention to issues of power, hierarchy, and coercion, and in turn, to the problem of sexual violence and/or harassment perpetrated by professors on campuses - an issue that is very under researched.
Are you a current or former student or professor at a Canadian postsecondary institution? Help us research rape culture and accountability on campuses across Canada!

21.01.2020 ✨ No motivation? The last two days I had no motivation to do anything. I just wanted to stay in bed and watch Gilmore Girls. So, I went out for lunch and dinner, now I had no reason to stay at home. Yesterday, I went for a walk with my dog and boyfriend. In the evening I knew I had to study but I couldn’t do it! So, I decided to switch my subject and study something else instead. I didn’t study long, only for around 90 min. But I was happy I done something. ✨
Never give up! If you only accomplish one or two task, that’s fine! Reword yourself for every task or goal you complete, no matter how small! That will help improve your confidence and sense of motivation 💖 And tust me, your brain digests whatever thoughts you create, so feed it with positive thoughts! 💖
A new type of immune cell which kills most cancers has been discovered by #CardiffUni scientists, offering fresh hope of universal treatment for all patients.
T-cell therapies for cancer - where immune cells are removed, modified and returned to the patient’s blood to seek and destroy cancer cells - are the latest paradigm in cancer treatments.
The most widely-used therapy, known as CAR-T, is personalised to each patient but targets only a few types of cancers and has not been successful for solid tumours, which make up the vast majority of cancers.
Cardiff researchers have now discovered T-cells equipped with a new type of T-cell receptor (TCR) which recognises and kills most human cancer types, while ignoring healthy cells.
The Cardiff group hope to trial this new approach in patients towards the end of this year following further safety testing.
