Creative Strategy & The Business of Design
I bought this book on Amazon purely because of the title. After all, I had been saying “Business of Design” on our YouTube channel for some time. Needless to say, I had high expectations and the book doesn’t disappoint. .
Douglas Davis is a practicing designer and founder of The Davis Group LLC (strategic and branding consultancy) and an associate professor within the Communication Design department at New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn.
As a creative, he felt ill equipped to participate in a strategic brainstorming session. He became determined to be a “creative who understands business”. So he applied to the Master’s in Integrated Marketing program at NYU. The program taught him about: brand strategy, digital marketing, analytics, operations and competitive strategy. .
The book is a summary of the things he’s learned since then and the recognition that there is a “big opportunity at the intersection of business strategy and creative execution.”
If you want to be relevant and carry a meaningful conversation with decision makers and entrepreneurs, learn how to speak the language of business and design. .
Inside, you'll learn about the business objectives and marketing decisions that drive your creative work. .
• Understand client requests from a business perspective
• Build a strategic framework to inspire visual concepts
• Increase your relevance in an evolving industry
• Redesign your portfolio to showcase strategic thinking
• Win new accounts and grow existing relationships
You already have the creativity; now it's time to gain the business insight. Once you understand what the people across the table are thinking, you'll be able to “think how they think to do what we do.”

HKURBEX stands for Hong Kong Urban Exploration. They are, according to their own description of themselves, ‘an anonymous, grassroots collective that seeks to unearth and document hidden sites in and around Hong Kong.’ People who become part of URBEX include ‘photographers, film makers, journalists, writers and adrenaline junkies.’ This is their book. In it they reveal to us a glimmer, through detailed and stunning photographs, of the many ‘forgotten structures … earmarked for the next wave of gentrification that,’ according to URBEX co-founder Echo Delta, ‘permeates Hong Kong.’ Says Echo Delta: it is “our duty to document their stories, not just for ourselves but to also contribute to Hong Kong’s ‘Collective Memory’.” Thank you URBEX for your good work, and to Blacksmith Books for publishing this special title. We are grateful to be able to share it with our readers, here and abroad.

My Sherlock collection has grown exponentially this year!! 🙌🕵🏻♂️ I scored big at our recent library sale, and found incredible and varied editions at used bookstores across Colorado 📚 My new favorite has to be the exclusive Book of the Month set from 1994; the covers and spines are just gorgeous and they’re practically new! 😍
I hope you’ve had a spectacular weekend, bookish peeps! 🖤
