Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Merlot or even not a fan at all. So, I seem not to buy it even if it is the only one option in a store – I’d prefer to check another one for better choice. Although Merlot really has been in customers disgrace for the quite long time, I think it’s a going away trend now. It used to be too simple, too acid (even sour), too transparent, too thin…
In Russia around 15 years ago when I knew totally nothing about a wine except it was red and white (and rose is a mix of them, dammed me) stores were full of cheap “French” red wine. It was Merlot in 99% bottles. Or called so. That’s made my taste – I hadn’t been drinking any wine for years ahead.

When you first start smelling wine, think big to small. Are there fruits? Think of broad categories first, i.e. citrus, orchard, or tropical fruits in whites or, when tasting reds, red fruits, blue fruits, or black fruits. Getting too specific or looking for one particular note can lead to frustration. Broadly, you can divide the nose of a wine into three primary categories:
Primary Aromas are grape-derivative and include fruits, herbs, and floral notes.
Secondary Aromas come from winemaking practices. The most common aromas are yeast-derivative and are most easy to spot in white wines: cheese rind, nut husk (almond, peanut), or stale beer.

2014 Enfield Wine Co. Syrah Brosseau Vineyard, Chalone- 4 barrels produced🍷
👁: Clear, deep ruby 👃🏼: Clean med(+) intensity. Aromas of stewed black plums, blackberry jam, clove, dried thyme, nutmeg, vanilla, and dried ink (like a sharpie). Although a 2014, the nose is youthful.
👄: The palate shows a high flavor intensity with marked black pepper, black currant, overripe blueberry, fresh blackberry, violet, smoke, clove, and cigar box. The body is medium, the alcohol is medium, the acidity is med(+), the tannins are med(+) and quite chewy. The finish is long and the wine drinks well now, but would be much better in another 5-8 years⏳
Was this my absolute favorite wine? No, but that’s also because I’m more privy to Northern Rhône showcasing Syrah with finer tannins and more savory characteristics🥩

Um dos vinhos que degustei ontem na especialização da Provence e me chamou atenção pela sua elegância e frescor.
Assim como a maioria dos vinhos da Provence é de assemblage, ou seja, várias castas diferentes, esse foi elaborado com as uvas Cinsault, Grenache e Syrah mostrando aromas de frutas vermelhas e um final intenso e frutado. Uma dica de harmonização que cairia bem seria com um peixe grelhado.
