SAT 5th OCT 2019
Now my office is temporarily set up, it looks more like a yoga studio.
I need candles, and incense and lots of zen in order to complete my shifts on the computer.
I love to make sure that my workspace is a place I actually enjoy being in! As a photographer we all want to spend 100% of the time with the camera and no time doing editing, but in reality it's like 10-15% with the camera for me.
Only usual thing missing from this picture is a gallon of coffee which is usually parked right next to my @laura_loves_co candles!
FRI 4th OCT 2019
It's not quite the Verazzano or even the Clifton Suspension Bridge, but I never get tired of seeing little old Diglis bridge. After the house move, I now live about 3 mins walk from it, so this may be my new local focal thing!
THU 22nd AUG 2019
I've been wanting to get an iconic summery photo for ages, but ended up with a dystopian cinematic photo instead... I wanted to make the hay look all summery and warm, and have nice side light on the hills, but we got this purpely-pinky Martian look instead.
This is basically me, everytime someone books me to shoot their wedding 💃
I capture so many epic portraits of people having the BEST time!
I think naturally people become a lot more relaxed around me as the day goes on - it's quite surreal for a lot of folk with someone having a camera trained on them all day. The dance floor is where people can really let their hair down and get down and duuurty!
I base my wedding days on approximately 12 hours coverage, giving me plenty of time to really capture those night owl shape throwing legends!
Give me a shout if having fun is something that you're into!
SUNDAY 18th AUG
One of my favourite things about working at The Kingscote Barn is how the light falls on the rolling hills behind the venue as the sun sets.
As the huge trees obscure the golden sun, this means you can photograph your couple in nice diffused and even shade, with golden light in the background.
FRI 16th AUG 2019
For me, the day after a wedding, I'm normally doing two things; getting some edits done for social media previews (circa 30 posted on my FB page), and smiling at the screen all day as I look back through them 😁
SAT 10th AUGUST 2019
Another Saturday, another wedding! Although this time I was videoing - with @lauraloves90 alongside! This is a still that will inevitably be the thumbnail for their video. Great to meet and work with @stilllightphotographyuk all day, who documented the day perfectly!
SUN 4th AUGUST 2019
You know that me and @lauraloves90 enjoy sitting by the fire don't you?
As we were chillin' hard and recovering from Saturday's wedding, I thought it would be a good excuse to test my DJI Osmo Action, in pitch black at 240fps (super slow mo). It's pretty good! The camera, not the film.
THU 18th JULY 2019
Having known absolutely zero about how to do macro photography, I can now confirm that I still don't have a clue 🤣
I've bought a reverse ring for one of my old film camera lenses to use especially for this with my Canon DSLR which means I get to do this style of photos for £3, when a good macro lens can cost nearly £1000.
I'll stick with the £3 option for now 🤔
I can see this becoming a bit of a phase hobby for me, I'm sure I'll be bored of it by next week... This is great practice for my wedding photography though, always handy to be able to shoot a diamond up this close!
Thanks to @lauraloves90 for giving me her ring to play with all day 😁
WED 3rd JULY 2019
Ok this sh*t is addictive now.
Loving the night skies that we've had over the Malverns this week.
Imagine if all those street lamps over Cheltenham and Gloucester went off over night... This is @jade_edwards_uk who asked me to paint him like one of my French girls, I told him that I'd take an 8 photo composite panorama instead, and he didn't mind.
TUES 2nd JULY 2019
I took this in the early hours of this morning from the top of British Camp, Malvern.
I love that I can see my hometown of Bromsgrove from up here, those huge pylons at Wychbold are always the marker for Bromsgrovians travelling home that we're almost home.
I took this photo at sunrise last week, and I'm enjoying the challenge of how many different ways I can shoot it. Go back a few days to see the summer solstice shot.
Laura was lighting the path, and was using her hands as barn doors to direct the light onto the path for half of the exposure.
Lighting the foreground was really important to show where on the Malverns I am, as otherwise it's just a silhouette of the hills with the sky. This is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the whole of the hills.
MONDAY 1st JULY 2019
So nice to be back under the stars again. I wish I had the discipline to get out and photograph the night sky much more often than I do, but unfortunately life (and tiredness) seems to get in the way.
Seeing the Milky way rise over the Cotswolds and the bright lights of Evesham and South Worcestershire was pretty dayuummm cool.
Lots of light pollution makes the MW look a lot more faint, but adds vibrancy to the shot, so it's not all bad!
FRIDAY 7th JUNE 2019
Today was a day of getting my teeth into Ben and Emma's wedding pics. I like to sit at the computer for long sessions and fine tune the edits until I'm happy, and even then I'll end up coming back round to them again before I finally finish them.
MAY 19th MAY 2019
Today was mainly full of burnt sausages and crisps.
Our pals JP and Cat bought baby Alex to come and see Laura as a birthday surprise which she loved. Mainly because of what they brought 😂
They also bought the most crisps in the world, as they know how much she loves her crisps. Even blindfolded, she was able to identify brand, flavour and even supermarket. Its freaky how good she is at crisps. We did a taste test. Perfect way to spend a birthday!
I don't think I've ever said crisps so much, ever.
Nice chilled day, ahead of our trip to Wales tomorrow!
A very happy 29th birthday to my favourite girl, @lauraloves90
SAT 18th MAY 2019
Emma, Ben and Willow let us take their pictures today!
If there is a dog at your wedding, I for one will love your wedding 😁
I got down very low for this shot, and as I did, Willow thought this was an invitation to jump on me - I managed this shot pre attack 🐶 Completely and accidently I perfectly framed and focused. Well sort of... This will forever be one of my favourite wedding shots. This is my kind of portfolio image!
Awesome to do my first wedding today at @lainsbarn - however this pic was taken over the road at Barton House. Laura assisted and doubled up as a 2nd today, and did an incredible job. Cant wait to start going through all these photos now! As a guess I'd say at least 95% of the photos from today are of Willow though.
Signing the register - most couples find this quite awkward and feel like you need a cheesy smiley shot. Instead what you normally end up with are two awkward faces... Just smooch it out is my advice, PDA's are the way forward on your wedding day!
Black and white or colour?
When that sun is blazing - black and white looks so cool in high contrast, but that being said, I love the real life look of colour.
WED 8th MAY 2019
British camp is the 2nd highest peak of the Malvern Hills, and this was taken from the top looking north towards Black Hill.
I'm not sure it's my favourite hill out of the lot, but it's 100% the hill that I've been up the most.
TUES MAY 7th 2019
I bought some new walking boots today, and British Camp was the perfect place to wear them in. These stormy clouds we are having lately are presenting interesting compositions! I love storm clouds, they add an extra ingredient into any photo (for me) and would rather shoot clouds than blue sky any day. Good for photography, maybe not so much for life though. Also I love the way the yellow fields contrast with the dark clouds. It's usually the other way round, dark at the bottom of a photo, and bright at the top.
MON 6th MAY 2019
Great day today! A 4-3 win after extra time means another promotion for Bromsgrove Sporting! That's their third in three seasons.
The play off final was hotly contested between us and Corby Town, who were worthy opponents but came up short in the end.
It's so good to see your hometown club moving in a promising direction.
Next season Sporting will compete in the Southern League Premier, which is the 7th tier in the English football pyramid.
Why would anyone watch football at this level I hear you ask? There are lots of reasons.
The community feel of the club, lack of corporate greed, the local nature of the players and club, cheap beer and food, the opportunity to see the growth and talent of young players, making new friends, all for under a tenner. I'm a huge advocate of supporting local businesses, and this is no different.
An attendance of 3000 is incredible for a team 7 leagues lower than Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
SAT MAY 4th 2019
This has to be one of the most pretty public footpaths in England, surely!? On my way back from an early morning property job I stopped off for a bit of blue sky photography. I love the vibrant colours of April, but especially May. Apart from Spetember (birthday month) it's my fave month. It's getting warmer, colours are vibrant and it's normally when the footy season is at its most exciting!
MON 29th APRIL 2019
Having explored Weston super Mare a bit today, I can confirm that it is really photogenic.
It also has an amazing pier!
As @lauraloves90 was at work today, I hung out with her mum and brother, and we hit the arcades. The pier is legendary!!! A little bit addicted to Deal Or No Deal arcade game... Some moody clouds and the full sea pool meant I had to reach for the 10 stop, to get this calm but mysterious looking mid afternoon shot.
WED 1st MAY 2019
Did you say white rabbits?
Exciting month ahead for me for photography! Heading out to Snowdonia, lots of headshots booked, and my first wedding of the season (that I'm photographing). What are your plans?
Laura was up and out early which woke me up, so I thought I'd stick my head out the window and take a picture of the view from the room. Heading back to the Midlands today, but first... CRAZY GOLF
Headshots are one of my fave things to shoot as a photographer. Don't get me wrong, they're not easy - especially when the time working with another person is limited, and lighting situations aren't perfect.
The conditions weren't perfect when shooting these corporate headshots last week, at their place of work.
Your job as a photographer is to manipulate light. Especially with portraits.
I shoot my headshots in natural light, and only use 1 reflector, max. I find big light setups and studio environments intimidating, so God only knows how people who aren't professional models feel.
I love problem solving, and I love the challenge of finding good places for portraits. Natural light is ALWAYS the best light!
THU 25th APRIL 2019
Eastnor Castle under the sunset tonight.
I'm enjoying the southern end of The Malverns at the moment, they are so much quieter and open up new views and opportunities for more shots you can't get from the northern end.
I'll make it to Eastnor Castle one day, it certainly looks impressive from a couple of miles away doesn't it?
What's your favourite castle? Edinburgh has to be up there surely...
And Dover. Warwick? Can't rule out Corfe.
I used to work at Warwick Castle FYI, as a ghost. I used to get paid to scare people.
TUES 23rd APRIL 2019
A day of shooting corporate headshots for me - which has kept me away from shooting anything nature related today.
In other news, Jubilee Drive looks phenomenal at the moment. So much so it made @lauraloves90 feel all philosophical and chilled enough to take a moment of calm and sit and watch the Bluebells sway in the wind, with British Camp casting its beady eye over her.
I need some good Bluebell locations before they go - can you recommend any? Where's the best ones (and untouched by people) you've seen?
MON 22nd APRIL 2019
First time up the hills in a week - ankle feeling much better now since my mini accident last week. Not quite 100% but good enough to get me up the central hills of The Malverns this evening.
I love the combo of my a6000 and the Sony 50mm 1.8 - even one handed walking down the hill I love the way I can freeze motion with it with such ease.
SUN 21st APRIL 2019
One of the things I still love to do as an adult is learn stuff. I'm a completely self taught photographer, and I am doing the same with video and film, but I'm a lot further behind.
I love creating stuff, but I'm a little but in love with creating video at the moment.
I used to upload regularly to YouTube, but stopped as I completely lost my mojo.
I've found my mojo baby! (Said like Austin Powers)
FRI 19th APRIL 2019
Who's sunburnt already? It's currently 3pm on the first sunny day of the year, and that temptation to hit the beer gardens is strong. The sounds of Spring are epic. Walk past any pub today and you'll be deafened by the sound of ice clinking against pint glasses. Bliss.
THU 18th APRIL 2019
A little dip into the archives for this one, but this is basically an exact replica of what happened tonight.
We sit by the fire a lot.
A time for us to chat about the week just gone and the weekend coming. We're looking forward to a social weekend and also a hot one - forecast looks gooooood! What are your plans for the Easter weekend?
WED 17th APRIL 2019
Earlier this year I decided I wanted to challenge myself and make a short film. The film is going to be based around objectives, both physical and mental, with @lauraloves90 in the starring role.
This section is something that will heavily be involved, as the fitness side of things will be one of the main objectives of the film, but the super objective, we want to climb a mountain together, hence the need to train hard.
Any takers on which one?
Huge thanks to Dan at @hitfitpt for his continued support, and being the best PT around.
Film will hopefully be ready, all being well, by late June.
MON 15th APRIL 2019
Today's been a work from home kinda day. I'll be honest, I love these kinds of days. The thought of doing a 10 hour shift in an office or factory fills me with dread (I've been in both those places), yet a 10 hour shift at home on the computer feels quite pleasant.
Did you see the wedding video/trailer I made two weeks ago? Well I've been working on finishing the full length version today, and in this pic here's me designing the title in Photoshop.
As a freelancer, it doesn't wash to just say "I dunno how to do that bit", so you have to learn to do it all.
That theory extends to accounting, web designing, marketing and business development. If I don't do it, nobody will do it for me.
Having the luxury of working from home is something I'll never get bored of, it just suits me down to the ground. I love learning as I go.
Terrible photo today, but a productive day for me nonetheless.
SUN 14th APRIL 2019
This is just about the best photo you can take of Worcester when you can't walk further than 20 yards without crying for your mummy.
Luckily the ankle situation isnt as bad as I thought after yesterday's fall from grace, and after spending a sizeable chunk of my day in A+E (God bless the NHS), I was told that my ankle wasnt broken (you can stop worrying now mum). Big thanks to @lauraloves90 for being my chef, nurse, taxi and general legend this weekend.
SAT 13th APRIL
Tonight's one of those nights where you realise how much you value your ankles.
Got the day off to a bad start when I rolled it in circuit class this morning. My first thought wasn't about the inconvenience, it was about not being able to get up the hills with my photo buds @jade_edwards_uk + @geoffmoore tonight. Conditions look great for photography, but I guess I'll just be watching Our Planet on Netflix instead.
Starting the new year off right! Along with about a gazilion other people though, we weren't the only people up Blackhill on new year's day. We even had to push a car out of a ditch on the car park as they had to park on grass as there was no space. True story.
I'm going to make a conscious effort to upload a photo a day this year, some will be absolute garbage, some will be less garbage. Follow the hashtag andymag365
/// January 2nd 2019 /// Tonight was pretty cool, I ended up going out after dinner to take a shot of the cathedral, but I wasn't alone... I met up with Worcestershire's finest @geoffmoore and also it was cool to shoot with @lauraloves90 as she was trying out her new tripod she got from Santa. Always nicer to do photography amongst fine company.
The hot chocolate afterwards at @theoldrectifyinghouse was pretty darn good too!
TUESDAY JANUARY 8th 2019
C O M P O S I T E
I picked up a new lens today, and without going into boring detail, it's made me feel awesome. It's a 2nd hand lens, and it feels just like new. I headed into Worcester today to test it out, and so glad I did! Definitely my fave photograph of the 365 challenge so far.
A composite, if you don't know, is an image that is manipulated in some way, with added elements from another image. For example here, I took a long exposure to get the blurry car lights, and also another 'normal' shot of the girl in the middle ground. Using Photoshop, I basically added the car headlight shot over the top of the shot with girl (not the sky though) and reduced the opacity of it until I thought the shot looked believable. Sounds easy? Took me an hour of fiddling to get it just right, but now I'm happy.
