QOTD: What is your favourite fantasy weapon or female warrior?
Weapons and fighting is something that I need to research a lot for stories, to feel like I’ve got a grasp on what a scene would look like. While I did some martial arts when I was younger, it is not something that works in every scenario or setting.
One of the best resources I have come across is Melissa Caruso and her discussion on Twitter regarding women sword fighters - which essentially discusses issues relating to strength, weight, height and reach, no matter your gender.
Particularly, she discusses something that books often miss, which is reach and how shorter people need to approach combat from the point of view that they are at a disadvantage due to the opponent have a longer reach. She runs through a wide range of tactics from surprise, to longer reach weapons, and speed.
If you are currently writing a novel or scene with any kind of weapon fighting, I highly recommend exploring the thread on Melissa Caruso’s Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/melisscaru/status/1213513852840808449

I'm surprised I haven't read The Sky is Everywhere since I love I'll Give You the Sun so much! - Chiara @eternaldelicacy
I started this book yesterday morning (02/16/2020) and I flew through this in a little over 24 hours. It’s majestic in the way it’s read. The author reads this herself and you can hear all of the passion and the emotion running out of her. This is read like spoken word poetry (I think that’s what it’s called) and I’m so glad that I listened to this on audio
This book is about a girl growing up in Brooklyn in a Latin/American household that is also very religious. The story follows her through her days while she finds herself looking at boys, how boys look at her, how her body is objectified and now her mother handles the change in her daughter as she finds herself. It reminded me of a girl I used to work with named Hadaya. I won’t go much further than that but I heard her through these words and it honestly made me appreciate this story even more
I can’t wait to pick up more from this author. Her writing style is so raw and real and it made me want to keep listening
#theburning by @laura_bates__ comes out in April from @sourcebooksfire and this might be one of most important teen fiction reads of the year. Finally a hateful rumor is taken to task and a satisfying ending is written that stands up against social media bullying and slut shaming. Past and present injustices to women are woven together illuminating how far we have come and yet there is more to be done. Get this book into your teen readers hands.
What a fabulous day with my tiny one. We picked up the older kiddo after school and continued on with our marvelous afternoon. Bed time involved circling back to reread the first Menagerie book to The Twelve Year Old since he skipped it the first time but that series is so darn good, we really didn’t mind. Off to sleep and headed back to the office, tomorrow. It’s a grand little life. 💕😌💕
Whether it’s because of our gender, our sexuality, our race , our weight, our looks, we can all sometimes feel like the underdog- a little battered. Bruised. Tired of the battle. But those very same things can also inspire us to push further. Strive harder. Achieve. Then one day you’re no longer the underdog. You’re the one they all underestimated 😉
To all the underdogs out there, I designed this notebook for YOU!

I have been having some terrible writer's block when it comes to this story, but I finally have been able to get over the hump and come up with the next part to my story Flatlined. ▪︎
Here is a piece of a conversation between Mikaylah and Damon as she is working up the courage to face her greatest fear: death.
I love the chemistry and the true friendship between these characters so much and am always excited to write their scenes together. It is amazing how the two of them give each other such strength to overcome such a dark time in their lives.
I also love exploring Mikaylah's mind with how she tries to understand what is happening to her and how to possibly overcome her fears.
I'm bringing you quite the late post today cause it's been a pretty chill day for me! I woke up late and I've been reading Untouchable by Talia Hibbert, book 2 in the Ravenswood Series, and it's very good so far 👀
Some books I'm planning on finishing this week are Frankly in Love and Havenfall! I would also like to pick up American Dreamer, The Sound of Stars, and Foul is Fair, so let's see how that goes 💫
✨I Have No Secrets by Penny Joelson✨
The Plot: 16-year-old Jemma lives with her foster parents and her two younger foster siblings. She suffers from severe cerebral palsy, so while her brain functions normally, she can not speak or move. She has twenty- something aide named Sarah, whom Jemma adores. After a young man is murdered in her neighborhood, Sarah’s new boyfriend, Dan (whom everyone else finds charming), whispers to Jemma that the police will never catch him, taunting Jemma, knowing that she cannot do anything with this information. But when a new technology miraculously enables Jemma to communicate, will she be able to point the police to Dan before it’s too late?
My Thoughts 💭: I don’t read many YA books, but this is definitely one of my favorites that I’ve ever read. This is more of a character-driven suspense novel than plot-driven. While I usually prefer the latter, I found Jemma’s character to be so compelling. I learned so much about what it’s like for those suffering from extreme disability, as well as what it’s like to be a foster child. Since Jemma could not speak, it was interesting to read all of her thoughts. She was such an incredible and inspiring character to root for! The book grabs you right in; it is easy to read and I flew through it in two days. I liked the fact that while it is a page-turning suspense novel, it also provides emotional depth. I highly recommend this one, even if (like me) you are not generally a YA reader.
Spent my day off from school catching up on some reading. What are you currently reading? 📚📖 .
**TRIGGER WARNING**. Contains domestic abuse, self harm, and bulimia! .
Mike Parker’s girlfriend has accused him of domestic abuse. The most kind, most athletic, and most handsome boy abuses his girlfriend. How is that possible? They seemed so happy in the hallways and they looked to love each other so much. How is it possible that the golden boy was abusing his girlfriend?
The book takes place from eight different view points. You don’t know who the eight view points are until roughly halfway through the book. Some parts are easy to figure out while others are a lot more challenging. Trying to figure out who was who really slowed me down and made the book a struggle to read. I think I was so busy trying to figure the characters that my focus wasn’t on the impact the book should have made. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #threestars
#Nasleep , hoofdstuk 24:

BOOK REVIEW: Havenfall by Sara Holland
Havenfall is a book based on an inn that is the connector of 4 worlds, Haven (earth), Byrn, Fiordenkill and Solaria. Once a year the doors open and delegates from each country meet.
I was SO excited about this book, it sounded like such a cool idea but it sadly didn't live up to my expectations.
Firstly, the characters have back story and roles...but little else. I found little personality in any of the main or side characters and therefore didn't have a connection with them, which I need for a book to be anything above a 3 star.
The storyline is mainly a mystery to be solved but it wasn't interesting enough to make me excited. I also guessed some of the main twists quite early on so very few things surprised me.
Maddie, as the lead character was weak. She constantly said "I need to do better" but then she wouldn't? And she blindly put her faith in people during a "who did it" scenario. She wasn't the lead I was hoping for.
Things that I like were the backgrounds of the different worlds, but we didnt get to see any of them or really learn a huge amount about the differences in their people other than their magic and physical attributes.
I also enjoyed the magic and wish we had seen more of that as well.
I received an arc which had an introduction into the worlds and the inn at the front of the book. I dont know if this will be in the final product but I found that it was lazy to not incorporate it in the story but to just shove it at the front. It is more what should be at the start of a second book as a recap.
I am pretty sad that Havenfall didn't work for me and unfortunately I don't think I will be continuing the series.
Please note that I was gifted this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Bloomsbury @mattea.barnes for sending this arc to me!

Q: What was the last book you finished? What did you rate it?
My last finished book was Summer of Salt and I gave it 5 stars! I'm being more selective with what books I give a perfect rating this year. This book just ticked all of my boxes though. It was beautiful, strong message of family and friendship, a touch of magic, LGBTQ+ rep(including Ace rep) and abusive. It may be a short road read but it is absolutely powerful and impactful. I think this one flew under the radar for a lot of us. I'll leave a swipe up link in my stories if you'd like to get a copy for yourself.

THIS. FREAKING. BOOK. Y’ALL.
The best way to describe my feelings is that I have a soul ache. You know that gif of Elmo on fire???? I read this book with the emotional support of my dear friends @starfall_reader_ and @youngpowerseries, and they braved the onslaught of overly emotional messages that I would spam them with every time I picked up the book to read. 😂❤️ We joked that reading this book was like being in a constant state of that one Elmo gif where he’s on fire. But in the best possible way. 😂 Even though I was constantly stressed the entire time, I LOVED this book so freaking much!!!!! Holy moly, it was SO GOOD!!!!!! I love Lou and Reid so much. On paper, a witch and a witch hunter sounds like an odd pairing, but I love their dynamic so much!!!!!! They challenged each other, pushed each other’s buttons, and ultimately were the perfect compliment to the other. I laughed so much while reading this book. Omg y’all. 😂 Lou especially, but everyone had their own moments. 😂 Also, the side characters are great. I would die for Coco and Ansel. I laughed, I cried, I stressed, I swoon and squealed like a freaking idiot when it came to my ships. I feel like my emotions and thoughts are still all over the place. 😂 Definitely one of my top reads of 2019, and a great read to end the decade on! I need Blood & Honey asap!!!!!

Also, Happy New Year’s Eve y’all!!! I can’t believe we are about to enter a whole new decade!!! Feel free to share any highs or lows of 2019 or goals you may have for 2020! Roaring ‘20s here we come! 🎉
